There is a reason why the radical islamist is anti democracy. Ultimately democracy puts the political, economic and security powers into the hands of the masses, not some demagogue. Muqtar Al Sadr and the Ayatollah Khomeini would agree with Baker. In the end, this is all about power and money and who controls it. I agree with not wasting time and resources on democratization of Muslim states.

Yep, the whole "winning hearts and minds" strategy is an utter waste of time, money, resources, and most importantly American lives. If we deem a nation to be a national security threat (like Saddam's Iraq was) then annihilate its warfighting ability and then get the hell outta there. Our armed forces aren't policemen or social workers, they're warriors. If a regime emerges from the chaos that's even more dangerous than the previous one, repeat destruction process. It would be a helluva lot cheaper, easier, and more effective than this futile nation building nonsense we're now enganged in. ....and it's not futile because nation building is always futile (it was obviously successful in Japan after WW2), it's futile because the Islamic world is evidently incapable of being civilized. Islamics respond to overwhelming strength only, not good inentions and "compassion."
