I don't have time to watch it right now (I'm really sick with a cold and starting to doze off) but I remember Dan Rather on Letterman. Letterman was off air for about a week after the 9/11 attacks. What I remember of Rather's appearance was "America the Beautiful" and how he teared up, and I cried right along with him - that verse -
"O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!"
Ever since reading Peggy Noonan's books back in the early 90's ("What I Saw At The Revolution" in particular), I've had a kind of respect for Dan Rather... as though I see him through Noonan's eyes.
I saw the link yesterday. A fox journalist was on the streets near trade center. And he asked a truck driver what he felt. he said he saw bodies falling , dead and injured. what was he supposed to feel he asked the fox journalist .I cant explane it ,but it was very moving .
