QUEENSLAND'S Coalition parties are at odds over whether the media focus on Steve Irwin's death has killed off their chances of winning Saturday's state election.
Liberal state director Geoff Greene today said Irwin's death on Monday after he was stabbed by a stingray's barb, had blunted a positive response to the Coalition's campaign launch the previous day.
"It's all over isn't it. Who could predict this?" Mr Greene was quoted as saying in today's Australian Financial Review newspaper.
"The reality is, in this election Steve Irwin is the news from now until the weekend.
"Those stingrays are public enemy No.1 for us."

Wow.
Frankly, Geoff, I could give 2 ****s if your party loses the by-election (or whatever you call it). That pales in comparison with this national tragedy which is being mourned the world-over.
Actually, now that I think about it, its Mr. Greene's stupid, self-absorbed comments that are 'Public Enemy #1" to his party's chances this weekend...
There was indeed - and I agree, they should.
Once again, the left benefitting from the death and misery of others.
Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but isn't Greene a Liberal? Isn't he bemoaning the Liberal's misfortune at media saturation?
The Liberal Party of Australia is Australia's major conservative party - yes, I know that is confusing, but it's an historical thing.
The liberal even mentioning that the Crocodile Hunter's death is affecting their politics would seem to reflect negatively on the liberals, not on the conservatives.
The Liberal Party of Australia is a conservative party - it's John Howard's party.
So, is the other side known as the Silly Party?
No, the Australian Labor Party - although I like your name better.
Basically on the left we have Labor.
On the right we have the Liberal Party and the National Party in coalition - basically both conservative parties with very similar policies - the Liberals by tradition are a city based party, the Nationals are a rural party. They are normally in coalition.
There's also a bunch of minor parties, some of which can get some representation, but which cannot realistically form government.
I take it that your elections, at least on the state level are limited to 1 week! Our Presidential elections now last well over 2 years!!
No - normally it's about four weeks of campaigning - because our elections aren't fixed but can be called at almost any time, there's a lot of campaigning all the time - but we get intense campaigning after Parliament is dissolved.
The Coalition was planning a massive blitz in the last week - that proves to have been a bad decision due to unforeseen circumstances, but I'm sure it made sense at the time.
Makes sense, 4 weeks would be a great relief here!!
If I were howard I would just say... " Leave it to liberals to try to make political hay while the rest of us Greive his tragic death.
And that is all I would say. You would immediately isolate those on in the middle not wanting to be associated with such smarmy coments. Of course we saw it at the wellstone funeral here.
Your hurricanes are cyclones. You have summer in December. The Liberals are Conservatives. You just gotta be different, don'tcha?
I'd heard that Steve supported the conservative PM, I even heard him give the glowing praise about Howard, it made us love him more. What odd timing. They ought to get permission and run the quotes of Steve showing his support for Howard and their Liberal (conservative) party.
