I can't depend on the media to tell me this so I'll ask here: WHY are we sending shuttles into space at $50M a pop? What are we accomplishing with this many flights? Is it just to delivery pizza to the russians stranded in space? For $50M, the guy is just going to have to be sacrificed for the sake of science if we don't have a better excuse.

It's a lot more than $50M per launch!

The Space Shuttle currently has two reasons for existing: 1) to meet our international obligations with the construction of the ISS, and 2) to repair the Hubble Space Telescope one more time. After that it will be retired and our space program will move on to bigger and better things with Project Constellation.

50 million? It's more like 500 million. ;)

They're planning on finishing construction of the ISS before the shuttle is retired in 2010. (Weren't we supposed to find Europan life by then?) I believe all of the shuttle missions will be tasked to carrying hardware to the ISS until it's retired.

Don't fall into that type of logical fallacy. The Space Shuttle program has only rolled back about 5 launches due to hurricanes.

The original space station was intended to assemble the parts of rockets which could fly to the Moon, Mars or other Planets.

Congress cut the budget, but Sen. Albert Gore was able to convince our government to fund a space station, if we worked closely with the Russians. Because the Russian launch complex is located so far North in Latitude, the space station was moved to an orbit that was compatible.

This Northern latitude of the space station, has made it totally useless as an assembly point for future space explorations.

The Space Shuttle, and the Space Station, are both useless for any future exploration of our Solar system.

That's about a quarter a piece from all of us? 50 mil isn't chicken feed but I would rather spend money on space exploration any day, than a lot of other stuff , such as the UN etc.
