An open letter from Mike McGavick

Friends,

I want to take a minute to reach out to you with a couple of thoughts.

Recently, I told you all in an open letter on my blog that one of my biggest mistakes in life was a DUI some 13 years ago. Granted, this disclosure was an unconventionally honest approach to politics, but I want to be candid with voters about my mistakes and the lessons I’ve learned.

I did not have a written record of the event, and I am not a lawyer. I relied only on my memory of a 13-year-old event. A copy of the police report has now been published, and it shows that I had two details wrong. I said I cut a yellow light too close, while the officer reported that the light was red. I said I had been cited, while the report says that I was both cited and arrested. I don’t believe that most citizens will consider these differences to be key in judging my integrity.

I believed, and still believe, that the relevant points were that I had way too much to drink and that I got a DUI. I think that was pretty straightforward. In fact, some people said it was “too much information”!

I’ve been candid with reporters all along, and I apologize if anyone felt I misled them—clearly, that was not my intent.

To my supporters and the curious, I’m sorry that we have all been distracted from the real issues facing our state. I first raised the issue of my past mistakes because I believe in running a different kind of campaign. Candidates shouldn’t be afraid to admit that they are human and to talk about lessons they’ve learned. Even with the media attention surrounding this embarrassing event, I still believe in campaigning in this open and straightforward way.

I believe Washingtonians are hungry for something different. They are tired of the politics of character assassination. The people of this state are looking for a candidate who offers change, who is willing to admit imperfection.

I look forward to debating the very serious issues that face us. Together, we’re going to change the policies and politics of this country for the better!

(PS: I will be appearing on MSNBC tomorrow morning at 9:30 AM discussing the campaign—please tune in!)

I just recieved this via e-mail from the Mike Mcgavick campaign, and I hope we can finally put this nonsense to rest, and get on with the business of ousting Maria Cantwell in November.

"...I hope we can finally put this nonsense to rest, and get on with the business of ousting Maria Cantwell in November."

I would hope so too, but don't bet on it. After talking with my - liberal - mother Sunday night (she is on the left side of the state- WA - I am on the right side) the DUI was all she could talk about. It is all the news the I-5 liberals need over there and to them the election is as good as over.

Maria Cantwell was elected six years ago by winning just 5 of 39 counties in the state of Washington. Yup! 5! There are enough people in the Seattle I-5 corridor to out vote the rest of the entire state (many of them over the last few years are transplanted liberal Californicators who heard that we do not have a state income tax).

I think that this state is "blessed" with the most liberal senators in the USA (Cantwell and Patty Murray) for as long as the world turns. Now I have to go throw up!!

Damnit Mike.

Stop apologizing for things that relate 0% to this election!

You falling right into the MSM character assasination ploy cordinated by the Seattle-Times and Seattle-PI to hand Cantwell the election.
Next thing you know you'll be holding a press conference to apologize for getting caught being tardy to class when you were in the 5th grade because the Seattle PI looked up your school records.

He's just airing something that would be brought up and used against him later.

Now it's old news, and we can always bring up Bobbe Bridge and the Kennedies if anyone wants to take it further.

Mike has a list of all his transgressions, and he's just gotta make 'em right.....

Have you heard McGavick's latest radio bit? It's offensive to partisan Republican's.

When will he ever learn?

It really doesn't matter so long as Cantwell wins those five counties.. Except for downtown Spokane she doesn't even bother campaining on the east side of the state.. It doesn't matter how we vote..

McGavick is not the ideal candidate.. basically a throw-away.. Most Gop have smartened up and figured that in a state wide election in the state of WA.. You are are unelectable.. Period..

I have no faith in the GOP having any voice in Washington state anymore.

100's of thousands of ex-Californians have moved up to Seattle right into those 5 counties. And what really just blows you away is that all these California refugees moved up here because of the mess the liberal democrat politicians have made in California THAT THEY VOTED INTO OFFICE FOR DECADES. The swarm of illegal aliens taking over, the high taxes, the poor education, the cost of living, the poor healthcare from all the illegals bankrupting the system, the politicians putting the representation of freaks and welfare hounds over working families. Every californian who now lives up here I met is always bitching about these as reasons why they moved up to Seattle.
And what do they do when the come up here?
They vote for politicians like Maria Cantwell, Patty Murry Baghdad Jim McDermott, and Christine Gregorie.
Starting the whole process of destruction all over again. And when they wreck Washington, they'll find the next up and coming city, and move there and start the destruction all over again.
Liberal californians are like the aliens from the movie Independence day. The move from place to place burning a political path of destruction where every they go.

In defense of *native* Californians: Hogwash! I am certain you will find that the most of the liberals wreaking havoc on Washington State are originally from Massachusetts, Minnesota or New York - Eastern or Midwestern liberals who made the trek West in search of "better opportunities" for their families. And no, the "gold in them th'ar hills" today is just fool's gold. The *real* gold has long since been washed away by clean Marxist/Leninist propaganda sold to the highest bidder on US College Campi(the proper plural of campus [Lat.]), or to the average churchgoer under the form of Liberation Theology.

Republican? What? The Party of Lincoln? Oh, yes, I remember; that's the party that gave us this huge gluttonous behemoth of centralized power and control we call the Federal Government....oink, oink! Americans are all too busy feeding at the public trough - but, they'll wake up when the slaughter begins, alas, but too late.

And let's not forget the Washington state holds the distinction of having the most notorious Wobblies in the world - anybody remember the "Soviet" of Washington? Californians did not do this to Washington; Washingtonians are to blame. By all means, take personal responsibility - that's the Republican way... Or is it?

...." Hogwash! I am certain you will find that the most of the liberals wreaking havoc on Washington State are originally from Massachusetts, Minnesota or New York"....

Hogwash! Not! If you survey most all recent (say last 8-10 years) Seattle transplants and ask them where they are from, six out of ten will give you the same answer. "California".

The joke making the rounds up here:

A Nebraska girl, an Idaho girl, a California girl, and a Washington girl are all taking a cross country train trip.
Suddenly, the Nebraska girl opens her bag and dumps a bunch of corn out the window. When the others ask her what she is doing, she replies "I am sick of corn!! That is all there is in Nebraska! Everywhere you look, corn! I am sick of it!"
The train travels a little farther and the Idaho girl suddenly opens her bag and throws a bunch of potatoes out the window. When the others inquire, she replies "I am sick of potatoes! That is all there is in Idaho! Everywhere you look potatoes! I am sick of potatoes!"
The train travels a little farther along, and using the same line of reasoning the Washington girl suddenly throws the California girl out the window!

You folks give me some degree of hope....

I'm living in Clark County in SW Washington, and we are being eaten alive by the local Democrats who cannot find enough ways to get our tax dollars. Last month the County handed out 113,000 new assessments, that increased property values an average of 35%, with some going as high as 51% !! They are peddling this in the local paper as just "sticker shock" and telling us not to panic...

And coverage of the McGavick campaign by the Columbian, is limited to things like a column this morning about the 20 demonstrators who came out yesterday to show how Mike McGavick is just like George Bush. They held a fake Bush-McGavick Campaign rally, and the Columbian staff was there with baited breath to catch every syllable.

The Columbian won't even acknowledge that there is even a Republican Primary going on, much less even mention a Republican running for local offices.

The point is, there's enough bias in the local media without the Republicans piling on our candidates as well. Especially when this whole tempest in a teapot was started by the Puget Sound based media in the first place.

I am sick and tired of being sick and tired about Seattle calling the shots for the whole State. The same thing goes on across the river in Portland; trust me that folks in Pendleton have a much different (read: redder) view of Oregon state politics than the DUers over in Portland do.

The question still remains: Do Republicans in Washington have the guts to do what it takes to vote out the likes of Maria Cantwell, Patty al Murray, "Baghdad" Jim McDermitt, Brian Baird, et al?

I think that the Washington Congressional Delegation is largely a National embarrassment. What are we prepared to do about it??

Hey BC... I spent my early years (70's) in Clark county. Right in Vancouver. My sister graduated from Hudsons Bay HS and my brother and I both went to Shumway right downtown before we moved. I enjoyed my time down there as a kid, but I wouldn't want to live there now. As you said, it is a little too "blue" for my taste!

My late father used to work for the Clark county assessor's office but finally gave up in disgust and changed jobs. That is why we moved away actually.

Anyway, nice to here from another Clark county-er and keep the faith!

HEY! And even Clark County came out somewhat Redder in the last general! Oh ye of little faith who roll over with all four legs in the air! We can do it only if we think we can, like the Little Engine! Repulicans, remember - If we don't pull together, we fall apart!

...."We can do it only if we think we can, like the Little Engine! Repulicans, remember - If we don't pull together, we fall apart!"....

You are right in a way. But when the libs outnumber the GOP and they own every state wide election there is little you can do. (Dino Rossi did give us some hope 2 years ago only to have the govenor's election stolen from him by- yup - none other than King county!).

All this talk of pull together is great: but if the GOP can not field a better candidate in '08 then John McCain, this is one life long republican who will vote some other way. I will NOT vote for McCain under ANY circumstances. People tell me "Oh but you have to vote for him or else Hillary will win".. Maybe. But I don't think that there is much difference between Hilly and McCain, politically. McCain is the ultimate RINO!

Want us all to pull together? Fine. Find a decent candidate. That goes for McGavick also!
