Feminist Greer slams Steve's antics
By Fiona Hudson in London
September 06, 2006 01:00am Article from: The Daily Telegraph
AS glowing tributes and praise for Steve Irwin filled newspapers and television screens around the world, fellow Australian Germaine Greer launched a distasteful tirade on the much-loved Crocodile Hunter yesterday.
Most London papers carried sympathetic news articles, features, columns and obituaries mirroring the disbelief felt in Australia.
But Greer launched a scathing attack on Irwin, declaring "the animal world has finally taken its revenge".
In her column in The Guardian newspaper, Greer said the wildlife warrior displayed the "sort of self-delusion it takes to be a real Aussie larrikin".
"There was no habitat, no matter how fragile or finely balanced, that Irwin hesitated to barge into," she wrote. "Every creature he brandished at the camera was in distress."

Yes. I do.
I want her to go away!
I have been tempted to check if the DUmmieboard has been rejoicing in the demise of Steve Irwin. This thread has saved me the trip (in addition to the necessary decontamination shower). Sick.
Not from the looks of her picture!Anyone is to old for her.Unfortunately, she did get her 15 minutes.15 seconds was more than she deserved.Funny how people you never hear of,are suddenly news. But as far as the comfort zone,I do not think she will enjoy it much.At least i hope not.Regards.
I was referring to post 70 where she talks about how she loves to look at pictures of boys, "ravishing boys". Anyone over the age of 16 is too old for her tastes. This woman is ugly on the outside and it's worse on the inside.
YEESH!
That sounds possible. Thanks for the information.
She is a fool who has done nothing useful towards the betterment of humanity. The world won't cry over her when she's gone.
I am aparently in the minority, but I think Steve Irwin was a showman who exploited wild animals for his fame, fortune and ego.
He didn't respect the animals he claimed to love - and maybe he did love them, but wild animals should not be teased, prodded, or goaded into defensive behavior so someone can look brave in front of a camera. Given a choice the animals would avoid contact with humans, but Mr. Irwin wouldn't allow them the dignity of their natural state. He needed to show them being agressive in order to make his show as sensational as possible. It wasn't enough for him to show the animals as they are without human interference.
If he had a "special connection" to the animals someone forgot to tell the stingray which was behaving in the way stingrays behave when they feel threatened.
I'm sorry he died so young and with young children who are left without a father, but he didn't consider that consequence enough to temper his behavior with wild animals.
He believed his own hype - that he was in control of these animals, when in reality, he was just lucky - until now.
