The problem with places like Grove College, is that there is no cultivation of ideas, except through teaching. Cultivation of ideas needs research.

In the hard sciences, maybe.

But can you give me an example of where research has improved the "cultivation of ideas" in, say, English Lit?

Good point. However I come from a mathematics background, where research is extremely important.

Research in English Lit. is probably necessary but they could do with way less grad. schools giving PhD's in that subject. (You can have a Masters and still teach well.)
