He would have been placed in a coma due to brain damage in an attempt to prevent deterioration. Apparently this was ineffective. His family approved removal from life support and organ donation. That was their decision to make, and someone else in the same situation is free to make a different decision.

Why dodge the issue? The fact is, he was alive when they took his organs. How does his family, or anyone else, have the right to decide such a thing?
