Mahoney faces incumbent U.S. Rep. Mark Foley, a Republican from Fort Pierce, in the race for the District 16 seat. The district encompasses eight counties including Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte in Charlotte County.
He said he'll oppose "wedge bills that divide us," like bills to intervene in the Terri Schiavo case or gay marriage.
"They're not bringing us together to solve America's problems," he said.

At that time, he should have investigated Judge Greer but he didn't. When he left that position, it was taken over by Crist pal Dave Simmons who also failed to investigate Judge Greer. Terri Schiavo's starvation death is the biggest coverup in Florida history. Even Kottkamp was a player. Sorry, he's done one thing in public and quite another to protect Judge Greer who belongs in prison.
