G.O.P. Sets Aside Work on Immigration

WASHINGTON, Sept. 4 — As they prepare for a critical pre-election legislative stretch, Congressional Republican leaders have all but abandoned a broad overhaul of immigration laws and instead will concentrate on national security issues they believe play to their political strength.

With Congress reconvening Tuesday after an August break, Republicans in the House and Senate say they will focus on Pentagon and domestic security spending bills, port security legislation and measures that would authorize the administration’s terror surveillance program and create military tribunals to try terror suspects.

“We Republicans believe that we have no choice in the war against terror and the only way to do it is to continue to take them head-on whether it is in Iraq or elsewhere,” said Representative John A. Boehner of Ohio, the majority leader.

If they refuse to close the border before the election, I WILL STAY HOME ON ELECTION DAY! The border = SECURITY!!!

So do it. Who needs fair weather conservatives who cannot be counted when things are tough. Just take the cowardly way out and stay home.

The Repubs have a failing grade on Border Security. If they won't govern with 3 branches, then I won't cry if they only have 2 branches.

Your choice .. hope you survive your plan

I don't think we could ever trust this Senate to pass an immigration bill that most of us would like to see. That was DOA, we were going to get a piece of crap at the best, and divide ourselves into two or three factions trying to get the crap done.

Not a smart plan going into a close Midterm election that could put Democrats, meaning rabid moonbats, in charge of our War on Terror.

hope we survive his plan, and hope there's not too many more like him... (they weren't going to be happy with any result from this Congress anyway, so why even try?)

Who needs fair weather conservatives?

Do you mean "fair weather Republicans"? It seems that his position is one of a steadfast conservative that will not cast votes for someone who doesn't espouse conservative views. Seems simple to me.

AQ is not on Main Street

There is a heckuva lot more chance that I will be murdered/raped/carjacked/etc. by an illegal alien than killed by Al Quaeda where I live.
I think alot of people see it that way.

"Clinton showed how inaction works-- he thought he would get away with it but he didn't."

One might say the same thing concerning our Republican majority and illegal immigration.

His position is cowardly because he is refusing to make the choice between the options that are offered. If he cannot have it his way, he will refuse to participate. If you don't want to call that cowardly, will you go for childish. You know, if I don't get my way, I will take my ball and go home.

It's been a problem for a long time, and there are not any easy solutions, any way we go will entail painful choices.

We cannot afford to divide the GOP right now in the 9 weeks before the election, when we know that the Senate is going to shut it down anyway (or worse). Sorry you don't get what you want right now, we don't have the Congress to make that happen.

Sorry but I have to reply to this, are you kidding me the cowardly way lol. Keep voting for so called conservatives and well, you keep getting so called conservatism.

You have a war in Iraq that no one seems to understand anymore.

You have soldiers being jailed for doing there job.

You have Hitler in Iran that no ones wants to do anything about.

You have open borders with thousands of illegals waving there flags in American cities.

You have spending that somehow can't be controlled.

And your calling people cowardly because we actually see whats going on.

I'm sorry but is this what true conservatism teaches or is this the Hush/Vanity school for conservatism?

Who would you vote for in a local Mayoral election: The candidate who wants to build a homeless shelter next door to your home or the candidate who wants to build the same shelter but increase the police force. It would be neither cowardly nor childish to say you would not vote for either candidate.

I'm just concerned about what they're going to try to do after their butts are safe for another couple of years.

Then they will stick it to us! They figure they'll have several years before they have to run again and they will hope that something happens to take our minds off of the "guest worker/amnesty." They've already proved that we can't trust them and at this point in the game, I don't intend to.

"This is probably a smart move to pickup Immigration in the next Congress."

I'd go along with that IF conservatives put the same kind of pressure on Congress that they did with the Harriet Miers nomination.

Going into '08, with an open Oval Office seat, Immigration could either be the unifying issue or the one that gives it to Hillary on a silver platter.

I have had it with so called mainstream "conservatism", though to be fair, Limbaugh does get it when it comes to immigration at least. That said, when it comes to immigration law vs. the WOT, immigration is a far bigger issue in most peoples lives than the distant WOT.

Most people in the US have to deal with the impact of un enforced immigration law from increased crime, to increased local taxes to seeing their local neighborhoods decline.
