The 100,000 NASCAR fans gathered here in the broiling heat of the California Speedway have big decisions looming ahead of them -- and not just to choose between that freshly made corn dog or the smoky BBQ ribs plate.
In little more than two months, many of these racing fans will be faced with major ballot questions on education, immigration and who will run the state for the next four years. Which is precisely why Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger showed up Sunday at the Sony HD 500, a premier NASCAR race and home turf of one the most influential -- and coveted -- voting blocs in the nation.
But if the Fontana crowd was any indication Sunday, Schwarzenegger's star still shines among California fans who count themselves among the 75 million backers of the fastest growing sport in America.

Hydrogen-hybrid racing!
You OWE me a new keyboard!!!
I wonder if Arnold knows that NASCAR uses -gasp - leaded gas?
Racing at blistering speeds of 45MPH!!
And replace those smoky BBQ rib plates with tofu and brown rice.
Of course, Dupont gets away with mixed messages, so....
Just read an NC thread in an online forum; Nice Gal and hubby moving from SoCal to NC. NASCAR is the passion. Go Arnold!
As he choreographs a delicate dance, Schwarzenegger has leaned decidedly left to woo independents and even Democrats. He has forged landmark agreements to reduce greenhouse gases and global warming; he has angered conservatives by supporting stem cell research and bills backed by gay-rights advocates; and he has distanced himself from President Bush. That has the potential to play badly with the NASCAR crowd, which has been viewed as a solid, family values GOP base: the socially conservative, working-class, overwhelmingly white guys who, drawn to hot cars chasing each other around the track at speeds topping 185 mph, don't necessarily put global warming at the top of their issues list.
Odd. An oft used phrase by California conservatives.
In California the phrase could imply either:
1) Back to Hollywood!
2) Back to Austria!
3) To South Carolina!
4) Anywhere but California!
And, If the phrase is uttered just after Schwarzenegger has proposed or approved legislation to increase spending, taxation, the size of government, the reach of government, the power of homosexuals or the cost of energy, it implies only one destination:
1) To hell!
If South Carolina will accept our liberal European interloper, California conservatives will be glad to arrange for his relocation. We only suggest the following logical cautions should the Austrian arrive at your door step, carpet bags in hand. Guard your wallet, place a identity theft warning on South Carolina's operating accounts, lock the state treasury and observe your child's classroom every two weeks if they attend public schools!
aRnold knows as much about Nascar as he does conservatism.
Loved his comment last year about how he loved to see the cars go into the corner at 240 MPH.. considering they barely if ever break 200,, well, I'll leave it at that.
His forte for hyperbole and exaggeration is matched only by his handlers abilities to send him where he would be best-advised not to lest he step in "'it", which he usually does.. on queue, it almost seems.
Hydrogen-hybrid racing!
Now THAT'S Progressive!
I had a chance during a car show to take The Spirit Of Allegiance on the Fontana track a couple of years ago. That was a thrill and a half.
Gee, my NASCAR pals in CA love him. He was more than well received yesterday.
