Saddened & shocked by this news.
So young to be gone.
I thouht sure that if he were was taken
by way such as this, t'would
have been via croc attack.

Though I prefere Jeff Cowin's similar program...

I also enjoyed Steve's show.

I wish neither would advocate evolution like Steve did
and Jeff still does.

Other than that stance,

I thought Steve was a great guy.
He was enthusiastic & cheerful & brave.
And a sweet family man.

Wow, I can't believe it, either. He was very entertaining.

I can't believe the way he died is even something that could happen to a person. Yikes. How terrible. Was he taken to a hospital or did he drown or were there crew people there who got him out of the water?

He was way far away from a hospital. Medical crews came by helicoper, but he was already dead by the time they arrived. One report said that he collapsed, so it sounds like either he was holding the sting ray or that he was in the water and he managed to get out of the water somehow, and then collapsed and eventually died.

My understanding is the sting stopped his heart instantaneously.

The celebrity worship in Western Culture is reaching ridiculous proportions.

Don't kid yourself. Little has changed since the days of Buddy Holly, James Dean, Elvis Presley, or Kurt Cobain. If Irwin had died fifty years from now of old age, it wouldn't be seen as the tragedy it is that he was cut down in his prime.

Yeah, it's unclear how long he had to contemplate his impending death. A major injury with venom right near the heart could cause the ventricles to fibrillate, so a direct puncture wouldn't be necessary for sudden death.

Would JFK be "immortal" if he was now in his nineties and dying of some dreadful social disease?

Always on the razor thin edge of danger. A true adventurer.

Advocate? Hardly neccessary to advocate a fact. And one which does not conflict with God and His creation, btw.

Yeah, it's unclear how long he had to contemplate his impending death.

He had roughly 30-60 seconds depending on the depth and location of barb penetration, and it is likely Steve felt tremendous pain. First from the piercing of the barbed probe. Then from the excruciating pain of live tissue being necrotized by the venom. Then, if he was still conscious, by the pain of a massive, fatal cardiac arrest. Thankfully, as you can read in books such as "How We Die", God has blessed us with endorphins to block out pain entirely during a fatal trauma. Hopefully Steve's endorphins kept his suffering to a minimum.

Steve's Ok now, but the family will have much to deal with.

Once the heart goes into the v-tach/v-fib combo, things are pretty painless because the person becomes unconscious within seconds. I know it sounds perverse, but let's hope that the venom significantly irritated the heart early on in the process so his ventricles fibrillated seconds after puncture and he suffered as little as possible.

evolution is not a fact and yes it does conflict with God's will word and way of things.

I am not persuaded by your view...& never will be. btw.

Thank you all for replying. I found the earlier thread on the sidebar and have been over there reading all about it.

Steve Irwin was very loved by many people. God bless him and rest his soul. My sympathies to his family. Lots of pix of the kids and his wife on that other thread, BTW.

Several callers likened the loss to the death of Princess Diana.

Funny, I thought about that comparison too - probably because they both happened late at night here in the states, were shockingly sudden and both represented an embodiment of their country. To foreingners, Irwin *was* Australia the way Princess Diana *was* Britain.

This is so sad ... two children ... wonderful wife and loads of little and big fans. He put his heart and soul into his work with attitude that made you smile and pay attention. We'll miss him.

In fact, I was ready to turn the light out and go to sleep ... when I switched to the news real fast and thought I was hearing things ... went to FR to check it out. Knew FR wouldn't miss this.

Rest in peace Steve. You are loved and will be missed.
