I think rather, he was afflicted with an intense life wish! He didn't want to die, he wanted to grab life around the throat and wrestle it :~) He lived and loved harder than the fearful naysayers, and his death is a great loss to many because of it.

Obviously death by stingray is rare, but it happens to divers and swimmers who are doing nothing to "tempt death." Scuba is safer than driving to the nearest convenience store, and thousands of hours of dive time are logged every year in areas where rays congregate.
