He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said. It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest.
He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary and that's when it occured.

How many people on this thread have said they were surprised? If you've got a friend very ill with terminal cancer and one day you get the dreaded call that they've moved on, you're not surprised, but you're still kind of in a state of shock that she's gone. Much the same with people who do risky kinds of things. (From astronauts to men like this guy.) No, I'm not shocked that the odds eventually caught up with him, but I'm still sad just the same. And for the record, I considered Steve an educator and an explorer more than I did an entertainer.
Jeez ... I'm seeing myself in that kitchen! *shudder* Lovely and loving post!
DU working hard to pin this on Bush. One angle, the Stingray was a Muslim enraged by Australia's support for the War in
Iraq.
I do hope you realize that you come off as a total jerk.
People like him, rarely do, but also enjoy taking pleasure in anothers misfortune.
How is not remotely the same thing? The guy was an explorer of nature. His shows were quite educational. He's inspired children to study animals and nature. Sounds like a lot of similarities there.
Give it a rest, Steve Irwin is a fantastic person and fans loved him and are mourning his passing away.
Your petulant sniping makes you look like a fool, take your hatred back to DU or whatever lib site you came from, get some dignity.
You should quit while you're still way behind.
Stingray venom has insidious, but powerful, localized tissue necrosing properties in humans.
What this means is, it kills any tissue it touches. If any part of Steve's heart was penetrated, fatal cardiac arrest would have ensured.
Looks like a dead sea turtle.
I jumped to conclusions on that one, my bad and I apologize.
That does not excuse your nastiness and pettiness when it comes to Mr. Irwin's death. While it may seem funny to you, a wife has lost her husband, and two children have lost their father.
If this was a documentary film being made, we may have video of the fateful event.
Yes, and out of respect for his family I hope it never sees the light of day....or the cover of the Enquirer...
Would never smoke, drink alcohol or even breathe polluted air. Take any medicine that has side effects, that means every medicine, sleep in a bed, you may fall out, take a shower, you could slip & fall, walk in the snow, ice skate, ski or take an airplane!
Tell me, where did you order your protective bubble that you live in? We may all want to get one to keep you away from us!
Bon AMI,,,THE Cocodre AND Cottonmouth TAKES care OF all fools ! ~~~~~Prayers Up For Steve And Family~~~~
If you get any further urges to screw up the thread about the just-now-getting-cold guy with the two young children, feel free to log off an go write about them in your diary.with your whi
Very true. Of course, a direct puncture to the actual heart wouldn't be necessary. That venoms pretty strong so even a wound right near the outer layer of the pericardium would likely cause immediate life-threatening problems like tamponade or failure and the associated killers like v-fib or PEA.
Anyone can update a Wikipedia page in seconds. There are thousands of Wikipedia nuts out there who are always looking to be the first to update a page with the latest breaking news. I bet the page at least had his date of death featured in less than one minute from the time it hit the wires.
