Read the Koran sometime and see if it's "moderate".
I could care less what the Koran says. I only care what individual Muslims (or anyone else) do or advocate. The Koran could say, "though shalt rape thrice daily," but that's not going to have the slightest impact on my practice of reserving the imputation of "rapist" solely for those who actually commit the crime.
So tell me specifically, wrt to, say, Khalid Duran -- a Muslim who co-authors articles with Pipes himself, and was a key researcher working with Steve Emerson in his ground breaking, pre-911 expose of radical Islam in America (American Jihad) -- how do you manage to disqualify him as a genuinely moderate Muslim?
How about a Mulsim like Irshad Manji, author of The Trouble With Islam Today, an open lesbian who's done joint booksignings with Salmon Rushdie? She's extremely critical of many elements and movements within her religion, and even describes herself as a "Muslim Refusenik," but in fact considers herself a good Muslim. So she can't really be a moderate either then, right? Please explain how she's not really a moderate Muslim.
If you manage to deal with those I can certainly give you more.
