From what I have read, Ulaf (?) practically forced Steve to say he converted because, unknown to Steve, the captors had told Ulaf they planned on killing Steve.
Yeah. I saw a joint interveiw where Olaf said just that. The captors took him aside and said that he (Olaf) would be allowed to live because he wasn't an American, but as an American Steve was as good as dead. Olaf (not telling Steve any of this until after they were released) then said that Steve was strenously rejecting cooperation with the "conversion" charade, and Olaf was repeatedly urging him to cooperate. So it seems Warren just has his facts wrong when he says:
But it is obvious from their later statements that they never thought twice
Warren is usually pretty good, but here he's just being an @$$hole.
