[history]
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan NATO and Afghan forces killed more than 200 suspected Taliban guerrillas with air strikes and artillery fire in a major offensive in a volatile province in southern Afghanistan, the alliance said Sunday.
A statement said four soldiers with the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force also died and seven were wounded in the fighting in Panjwayi district, about 10 miles from the city of Kandahar.
The casualty counts could not be independently confirmed because the government ordered vehicles to stay off roads leading to the area and reporters were unable to gain access to the battle zone. There was no indication of bodies being taken to local hospitals.
"Reports indicate that more than 200 Taliban fighters have been killed since Operation Medusa began early Saturday morning," the NATO force said in a statement.

Coalition forces took the unusual step of convening a press conference for local journalists Thursday where they warned any civilians left in the area to flee their homes before the fighting began in earnest.
They also air-dropped at least two batches of leaflets ...aimed at convincing any skittish or fairweather Taliban to lay down their arms before battle.
"Might they just fade away?" said Col. Lewis. "If they're smart they will."Hope I'm not the first to fall off the cheering wagon, but it seems the Cintonian Paralegal-military Command strikes again.
In actuality, 200 ignorant Afghani kids went to hell, while the real Taliban ringleaders ran off to raise more recruits.

It seems NATO warned the enemy with leaflets. So the critical leaders lit out to murder another day and left 200 Afghan suckas behind to catch the ordnance.
QUESTION: When is the NYT ratting out the NSA treason, but NATO Command ratting out their own offensive -NOT- treason?
ANSWER: When our own WOT logic is FUBAR.

This apparently is a real hot spot. We killed 72 in this same area on 8/20.Seems very likely.
From #58 - "They also air-dropped at least two batches of leaflets carrying similar warnings....aimed at convincing any skittish or fairweather Taliban to lay down their arms before battle."
If they did this on 8/20, the 'leaders' probably lit out and let those 72 poor fools get creamed, and then used their deaths to raise the 200 cannon-fodders this time.
These arab bastards use their comrades like we use JDAMs, but they have a MUCH BETTER propaganda operation.
We MUST stop this leaflet/loving warfighting.

" KANDAHAR CITY, September 3 (Pajhwok Afghan News): As many as 230 Taliban fighters have been killed in two days of fierce fighting in Panjwayee and Zherai districts of the southern Kandahar province, a source told Pajhwok Afghan News on Sunday. " I like "almost 300" better

Not a helicopter. The Nimrod MR.2 is used over Afghanistan as an ISTAR asset. (Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaisance). The Nimrod MR.2 was from 120 Squadron based at RAF Kinloss, Scotland. The U.S. Navy also employ their P-3 Orions in an overland role. Both types have been active extensively over both Iraq and Afghanistan in the ISTAR role.

The Nimrod MR.2 was from 120 Squadron based at RAF Kinloss, Scotland. They lost a Nimrod? How'd they lose a Nimrod? Not to a missile, I hope!
To: lentulusgracchus
The crew of the Nimrod sent out a Mayday according to the Ministry of Defence. It appears to have been an in-flight technical fault that resulted in the loss of the aircraft as it attempted to return back to the airfield.

Oh, gremlins then. Damn. And that's a bad loss of fine aircrew -- highly trained, hard to replace, and I'm sure they'll leave a hole with their mates, too. That's just really too bad.
Condolences to the families, these were the good guys.

ANSWER: When our own WOT logic is FUBAR. No excuse to take a FUBIS attitude toward the Iraqis and Afghanis who are trying to keep the knuckledraggers at bay.

I didn't say ANYTHING on the order of FUBIS. I said that the NATO lawyers had infected the Afghan war, too.
We need a new UN/US/US/UN strategy slogan, like, "The lawyers out of the shooting, and shooting all the lawyers."

Later, when they returned to their cave, the Talibunnies all congratulated themselves on having inflicted massive casualities on the infidels. "I killed at least 20", said one of the Bunnies. "I know I must have killed 100!" proclaimed the Bunny chieftain. Great cheers of celebration and happiness rolled through the protective cave. Then one of the Talibunnies noticed a tiny red light dancing on the wall of the cavern, as if it were Tinkerbell, followed by the sound of an approaching jet fighter-bomber. Little did the 186 Talibunnies know, they had but ten seconds to live.
