A year ago, a purported friend of his said he recognised Mr Stewart's voice after a man wearing a balaclava appeared in an al-Qaeda video calling for a holy war.

But an investigation by ASIO, the AFP and other security agencies using advanced voice analysis technology has failed to substantiate the allegations against Mr Stewart, Fairfax newspapers reported today.

Hmmm... very curious. It's strange, if Stewart has joined al Qaeda, that Gadahn would refer to him by his Christian name, as if he hasn't taken a Muslim nom de guerre.
