I can't remember where I read this, but one of the South American Indians (I think the Inca) sacrificed children in order to placate the rain god. It was considered auspicious if the child cried a lot as he/she was being taken to his death, as the excessive crying meant more rain.
I am not one bit sorry this culture was wiped out. Hurray for Spain!
