If what they did was *truly* murder and not just something that happens in the fog of war,then the death penalty is appropriate,IMO.
But the prosecution would have to present *very* convincing evidence to me before I'd convict them of *murder*.
I'd hate like hell to see some modern day replay of "Breaker Morant" happen to any of our guys.

It's not only appropriate if it was murder, but you talk about another way to demonstrate the difference between us and Saddam. Saddam rewarded his troops for murdering innocent people - we punish our's.
