With tears welling up in his eyes, Bob Schieffer finally concluded his 18-month tenure as anchor of the CBS Evening News with an emotional in-studio tribute.
Incoming anchor Katie Couric joined Schieffer at the end of Thursday night's broadcast in studio for a retrospective of his career, featuring a one-one-one pre-taped interview with the former Today Show host herself (perhaps to give viewers a sneak peek of the Katie to come?).
Schieffer's professionalism resuscitated the reputation of the CBS Evening News at a time when the legendary news organization was mired in scandal in the wake of a widely disputed report about President's Bush's service in the Texas National Guard. The tears came at the end of the pre-taped segment, when Schieffer acknowledged that he did not believe in anyone being self made, saying the he is the product of many people- his mother, his wife and his daughters most importantly.
A survivor of bladder cancer, Schieffer is not retiring and will return to CBS News in his previous capacity as the White House Reporter. Katie Couric makes her debut as anchor of the CBS News on September 5.
What's a "CBS Evening News"?
Tears after an 18 month tenure? I swear, the men in the media must take female hormones.
Interesting that there's no mention of who was the driving force behing that "disputed" story about Bush and the National Guard. Gee, will we pretend that Dan Rather never existed????
he wasn't half bad. he told the news without inflection or carefully crafted anti-administration phrases, imagine that.
It's another way to say, "Sham", but that's not important now....
Dan's been chucked down the ol' memory hole.

That's rich! Schieffer is as big a liar as Blather. But I do agree that CBS's reputation for journalism is legendary--pure legend, in fact.
"With tears welling up in his eyes, Bob Schieffer finally concluded his 18-month tenure"
Who wouldn't cry at CBS based on the mess Dan Rather left it in? Bob, needs to do more of a "Wheww!!! Glad that's over!"
Who, besides Mapes and Rather themselves plus a scattering of moonbats, still "disputes" the facts of the case?
Ahh, TV evening news. I remember when I used to watch it back in the day.
Oh, man, that just tickled my funny bone! LOL! So true, isn't it?!
Tears of over inflated self importance.
When rats leave a sinking ship, do they cry, too...?
I cried in 2 minutes watching this:
