CNN's Kyra Phillips Has Last Laugh (Top Ten List)

CNN anchor Kyra Phillips, whose bathroom gossip was broadcast live on CNN on Tuesday, appeared on Thursday's Late Show with David Letterman to give her side of the story.

That is, she delivered Top 10 list of reasons why things went wrong. (Phillips accidentally left her mic on when she went to the ladies room while covering a speech by President Bush in New Orleans – and her family gossip was broadcast live. CNN issued an apology, and Phillips told Letterman no one was fired as a result of the snafu.)

Phillips's Top 10 list:

10. Still haven't mastered complicated on/off switch.
9. Larry King told me he does this all the time.
8. How was I supposed to know we had a reporter embedded in the bathroom.
7. I honestly never knew this sort of thing was frowned upon.
6. I couldn't resist a chance to win $10,000 on America's Funniest Home Videos.
5. I was set up by those bastards at Fox News.
4. Like you've never gone to the bathroom and had it broadcast on national television.
3. I just wanted that hunky Lou Dobbs to notice me.
2. Okay, so I was drunk and I couldn't think straight.
1. You have to admit, it made the speech a lot more interesting.

Good for Kyra. We all say stuff we regret, but very few have those words broadcast worldwide.

I dislike the slant of the article; the problem was not Kyra Phillips.

If you listen to the audio, her mic is NOT online (it may be on and transmitting but the sound board control is OFF). Then, her mic is brought up, then up more, and Bush's feed is brought down. The levels are adjusted several times. A person went up to her and told her to switch off, but all that needed to be done was to have the sound engineer push the slider down, something the producer could have told him to do as soon as the problem started.

Someone at the control console brought her audio online and mixed it with the press conference feed- there is the error, not that Kyra did something wrong and should have left her mic off. What are all those guys in the control room for?

My bet is that the audio guys routinely listen in on the wireless mics as a goof. This time, they made a mistake and instead of the audio going to the in-studio monitors or the headphone jack, it went to the main bus, and out to all of us.

I'm glad she can make jokes about it but no way is this her fault. It sounds to me like she's been asked to take one for the team. If I were the person in charge of that control room I'd suspend pay for everyone in the room and fire the guy who brought that channel up on line. The whole thing is extremely unprofessional and is more like a college FM station than a national broadcasting station. And a goof at a college station would not have gone on for 85 seconds.

Don't feel bad, neither do I, and I have a GREAT sense of humor (as I'm sure you do) but this bit on Letterman wasn't even as funny as some of the commercials (and THOSE are usually lame as Hell).

I almost thought that Kyra is getting an anchor job - sort of Rest Hour w/Kyra at 8.

Come to think of that, she then could have transformed her name into Kyra Loo Phillips - then definitely #3 would be in play...
