AHMED FAWAZ sits in a wheelchair in a sweat-stained hospital gown, smoking a cigarette in the sweltering heat.
He was discharged from a Beirut hospital this week, after losing his leg when a Lebanese Red Cross ambulance he was in with his family came under an Israeli air attack in south Lebanon on July 23.
The incident near the village of Qana left his son Mohammed, 12, scarred by shrapnel.
The attack on two ambulances ferrying the injured between Tibnin and Tyre was widely reported by the international media. Yet the Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer, has condemned press coverage of the incident, suggesting it was a "hoax".

They do. By changing their story: "Yet Red Cross volunteers manning the ambulances and Mr Fawaz insist the bombs were small weapons fired from unmanned drones." It's no longer a missile that hit right in the center of the cross. Now it's small weapons fire from a drone. How that was supposed to tear the man's leg off (and, helpfully, cauterize it so there was little blood in the ambulance) is a mystery.
They changed their story to be sure. But that is not a refutation of the original story.
From the pictures that were posted on FR yesterday, the spalling was outward. That means something inside the vehicle exploded.

Even an oxygen tank is an explosive in the proximity of a lit cigarette.
And speaking of story changing, they've also changed the vehicle involved. Now it's not the ambulance with the hole in the roof, it's some other ambulance, and they never really saw an airplane, so it must have been a drone.
