It shows their dearth of creativity that they can't even make up new stories.
"Dearth of creativity"
I was deployed to Uzbekistan in 2003-04. I hasten to add that if you're obliged to spend duty time in a Muslim country, Uzbekistan is a far friendlier place than most of the Islamic world.
Anyway, one day one of the interpreters proudly showed me a new book of "authentic Uzbek folk stories", translated into English by the U.S. embassy in Tashkent. Reading it through, I saw that every folk tale came straight out of the classic "Thousand and One Nights", only set in Uzbekistan with Uzbek-named characters. Genies, flying carpets, magic rings - same as the Arabian Nights.
Whoever put a turban on Pinocchio has nothing on the Uzbeks.
