Unfortunately, I must concur.
Those who do not learn from history will be doomed to repeat it.
"Guns, Germs, and Steel" showed how the West conquored the world by a combination of disease and the synthesis of gunpowder and steel to military applications.
"Culture and Carnage" elaborated that theme by showing how the combination of Western culture and technology supports and is supported by the ability to efficiently slaughter millions of enemy military and civilians.
The history of WWI is there for the Islamists to see -- it resulted in the deconstruction of the Ottoman Empire, the elimination of the Caliphate, and the secularization of Turkey.
The history of WWII is there for the Islamists to see -- it resulted in the utter devastation of both Germany and Japan, both physically and spiritually, and the slaughter of large percentage of their populations (and the rape of every female in East Germany).
The history of the Cold War is there for the Islamists to see -- the Empire of the Soviet Union, held together by utter ruthlessness (e.g., the slaughter of perhaps 50 million people), collapsed because of the inability of their economic system to match the riches of the West.
The Islamists look at our "Geneva Conventions" and sneer at them as an example of our "weakness", and take advantage of them. They do not consider that they are self imposed, that we win our wars in spite of these self imposed limitations, and that when our survival was at stake, we ignored them. For example: at the beginning of WWII, Americans were appalled at deliberate bombing of cities --- at the end of WWII we killed almost 1 million Japanese with such bombing, and stopped only when we ran out of bombs -- and then we dropped 2 atomic bombs and announced that we would continue dropping such bombs until there were no more Japanese cities left.
After our survival was not longer at stake ... many of us were appalled at what we had done, and re-imposed our limitations -- we entered into treaties banning biological and chemical weapons, refused to develop the neutron bomb, removed all "tactical nukes" from military hands, pledged "no first use", agreed to limit the number of our atomic warheads, and agreed to suspend tests of new atomic devices.
The Islamists look at this and belive us to be weak .... forgetting the fact that what can be agreed to ... can be unagreed to when our survival is at stake.
The only two questions left, are, ... how long before we reach the point of staring survival in the face ... and how many millions we will have to kill before they decide that living without jihad is better than being exterminated.
