NEW DELHI (Reuters) - The Supreme Court confirmed the death sentence for two sisters on Thursday for killing kidnapped children by smashing them against electricity poles.
The death penalty is carried out in India by hanging but women have rarely been given the sentence.
The women from Maharashtra had been convicted by a lower court and the top court upheld their death sentences, saying it was a "rarest of rare" case.
The two women, Renuka Kiran Shinde and Seema Mohan Gavit, were convicted for running a kidnapping racket in and around the cities of Pune, Kolhapur and Nasik in Maharashtra between 1990 and 1996.
They kidnapped children and forced them to beg or steal. When pursued by police, they killed the children by smashing them against iron poles, police said.
Their conviction was based on the murder of five children, out of nine the prosecution accused them of killing. The husband of one of the women testified against her.

They need to be smashed into iron poles. How sick.
Only a hanging? They should be impailed and left to rot in the public square as a warning.
They make Fagan look downright kind-hearted.
Another case of "If we wrote this as fiction, no one would believe it."
Hmmmm.... This won't go over well in Europe or Massachusetts.
That was the point of Oliver, wasn't it?
Thank goodness ACLU lawyers aren't there. These animals probably had a rough childhood, drank too much coffee and the definition of smashed heads would have to be cleared up.
Hang'em HIGH and add it to pay per view!
They should have their eyelids cut off and be lowered slowly so they can see and feel every minute of their death, not a quick neck-snapping.
Bury them to the neck and let passersby have a go with a nail file.
Then add syrup and wait for the ants.
unlike your country(Nepal), India isnt run by commies(maoists)! We have rule of law and we are a democracy. 3 courts, right from lower criminal court to the country's highest court - Supreme court, have found them guilty. So, just becuase you believe in stereoypes about Indian legal system, doesnt mean they are innocent!
To quote Cobb from Silverado, "We're gonna give you a fair trial, followed by a first class hanging".
Either my attempt at sarcasm failed miserably, or an_Indian is just stuck up.
My apologies bhai! My statement was harsh too. I wasnt thinking correctly.
