Thanks for the assist. It's coming back to me now. He was given the ship Admiral Nimitz (Robert Mitchum) was forced to temporarily give up command of while he recovered from some sort of skin disorder.

Actually, that was Admiral Halsey who had the skin condition. Nimitz was the top guy in the Pacific.

Nimitz was played by Henry Fonda, I think, Mitchum played Admiral Halsey, while Ford was Ray Spruance. With Charleston Heston had the lead part as the naval intelligence officer. Compare these men with the ones available to take part in the recent 'Pearl Harbor' flic. We can't have movies showing American heroes because we don't have actors who can play American heroes.
