Love this pic of the track from the old days.
Location Fontana, CA Distance / Track Type 2.0 Mile Oval 14-degree bank Nextel Cup Top Race Speed 155.012 by Jeff Gordon on 6/22/1997 Nextel Cup Top Qualifying Speed 188.245 by Kyle Busch on 2/27/2005 Plotting strategy There likely will be some long green runs when the cars get spread out, and that's when you have to have fuel-mileage strategy. The first time we raced at California, in 1997, Jeff Gordon won on fuel mileage, so it's always a factor at this track.
Gordon and former crew chief Ray Evernham were great at adjusting their car when they were together. Maybe that's why they won two of the first three races at Fontana. Even if you have a good car, you are going to have to work on it all day because the track changes throughout the race. Because the track isn't hard on tires, devising a sound tire strategy is a must. Get that track position, if you can, by changing two tires instead of four. Near the end of the race, definitely go with two or don't pit at all. I'd rather be leading the race on 20- or 25-lap tires than back there in 10th position on fresh tires because you're back in traffic and the car won't run as well.

I know this is the California thread but this is a great story from Bristol.......funny anyway.
There was a guy that was dropping a T-shirt for the drivers to sign! It was soo freakin funny! He had it on a hanger with some cardbourd inside to keep it formed.. with a sharpie hooked to it! We would scream up to him to tell him when the drivers were coming and he'd drop it down with a tape measure... LOL and when they were done signing the shirt he'd hit the button and it would retract.. freakin GREAT!
Then.. Robby came over just as a cop was yelling at the guy saying he couldn't drop the shirt anymore... Robby looked at the cop... At the shirt... up at the guy and back to the cop again... then... He grabbed the pen and signed the shirt! The crowd went wild! it was great!

Thanks, WCG. Did you see the Nascar.com article on Fontana - getting butts in the seats? Interesting.
