THE WILL TO WIN. DOES THE WEST STILL HAVE IT?
The New York Post ^ | 30 August 2006 | By DONALD RUMSFELD

Posted on 08/30/2006 5:19:11 AM PDT by .cnI redruM

EDITOR'S NOTE: The following is adapted from Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's speech yesterday at the American Legion National Convention.

The American Legion has achieved a great deal for our country since its founding in the months following World War I.

That year, 1919 turned out to be one of those pivotal junctures in modern history - the beginning of a period where, over time, a very different set of views would come to dominate discourse and thinking in the West. A sentiment took root that contended that, if only the growing threats that had begun to emerge in Europe and Asia could be appeased, then the carnage and destruction of World War I might be avoided.

It was, as Churchill observed, a bit like feeding a crocodile, hoping it would eat you last.

----snip----- * And when Amnesty International disgracefully refers to the military facility at Guantanamo Bay - which holds terrorists who have vowed to kill Americans, and is arguably the best run and most scrutinized detention facility in the history of warfare - as "the gulag of our times."

Another glaring example. Those who lack the spine to fight evil feel forced to impugn the motives of those who do. That is the impetus behing Amnesia International branding Gitmo the gulag of our times.

Rumsfeld is 100% right. The only way we can lose this war is if we beat ourselves. Once upon a time the media helped and we won World Wars I and II. Now the media is an active enemy, and we have beaten ourselves silly.

The real question is: will we get it in time. Our biggest problem is first, liberals and second, the indifferent middle. The indifferent middle just thinks that things are hunky dory and doesn't want to hear bad news. Eventually, they will hear it. For a short time after 911, they rocked.

OTOH, the left responds viciously when it's assumptions are questioned. Eventually, Islam will even hit the left where it hurts--maybe with Burkhas for the girls maybe something else. It will take big neon signs for them to finally see there is a problem. But when they do they will be far nastier than the most right wing conservative--and any conservative who has questioned affirmative action in a roomful of liberals knows how nasty they are.

The real question is: will the neon signs light up soon enough. That is in doubt imho as the left, in theory, wants to destroy western civilization and replace it with an "affirming, inclusive" culture (snicker). That's kind of the warm, fuzzy thoughts they have about the future. But lefties are also addicted to their lifestyle--you can only really believe in the affirming inclusive culture as a wealthy westerner where you are very insulated from reality. When bike paths, starbucks naval rings, and bathhouses are actually threatened, watch out. I'm not trying to be funny about this. They will be vicious.

Fortunately, the indifferent middle wakes up a lot faster and, between conservatvies and the indifferent middle, there's a clear majority of political power in America. This suggests the WOT will proceed in spurts as the indifferent middle wakes up and falls asleep over and over.

Absolutely. We have the ability to absolutely crush almost anybody we want. But we don't want to see pictures of dead civilians on LSM news broadcasts. That's all that stopping us.

This nation has gone soft. Political correctness and Diversity Police have rendered our culture impotent. We have failed future generations if we don't emulate what our grandparents did: Fight Facsism. End Tyranny. Spread Freedom. These three concepts just happen to comprise the Bush Doctrine. Democrats, liberals, and the MSM just can't have that, so they choose to be a soft target living in a world of unreality. Until they face their OWN demise at the hands of Islamofaschists some day soon if they are voted into power.

Why bother us with this. The most important question is "are the Bucks number one"?

Too bad treason doesn't mean anything any more - It would be nice to see Sulzberger and the editorial staff of the NYT being marched to the gallows.

LOL I know. Rumsfeld is preaching to a brick wall. What a shame that it will take another terrorist attack before American wakes up again!

The root of the problem is the media. When the American people finally wake up, likely after some cataclysmic event, there will be Hell to pay and the media better be prepared for it.

I believe the question is not whether we can win. It is whether we have the will to persevere. - Donald Rumsfeld

This is the money quote, in the last paragraph.

I think Rumsfeld is really worried we will not have the will after the 2006 elections - certainly after the 2008 elections - if the Democrats win heavily or take over. The constant drumbeat of negativism on Iraq and Bush is taking a heavy toll and has cut the guts out of our common drive to win. Now, many just want it "over" and a return to normalcy.

This is not the speech of a leader confident of our ability to persevere into the required future.

The MSM, the Democrat Party and the Legions Of The Deluded On The Left are doing everything on their considerable power to assure we don't persevere.

We have met the enemy and, unfortunately, it is some of "us"...

Even another attack will not wake up America, IMHO, because all taht will happen is that Shrillery and her ilk will simply blame Bush an use it as a further wedge between one group and another.

The American people have an amazing ability to sleep through storms. I hope we all don't wake up some day, finding that we are no longer the kind of Americans I was raised to be.

The loony left hates Bush more than they love America. That's it in a nutshell.

Rummy was responsible for the number of troops (or lack of) in Iraq. I like the guy but he made a big mistake on this score.

Secretary Rumsfeld clobbered them with this speech. They'll weep and moan, which is just verfification of numerous direct hits!

In this "long war," any kind of moral and intellectual confusion about who and what is right or wrong can severely weaken the ability of free societies to persevere.

Bang on.

The MSM is so corrupted by PC that they cannot recognize evil. They cannot call what are little more than criminal gangs - al Queda, Hezbollah, Hamas, and a host of other islamawhacko organizations - what they actually are, and are concerned instead with portraying them on equal footing with us and our efforts. At the same time they see a good man who believes in Christ as inherently evil, bloodthirsty, and warmongering. They live in a morally inverted world.
