The tidal station is on the lagoon side of the island, which could have helped keep it safe. Perhaps the atoll also helped break the waves.
The station is still working (although who knows how accurate it is?). We had readings at 13:48 and 14:06 Zulu. Pressure is up to 979.70mb.

Curious about when you were in SF.
I just finished reading a SciFi book "Replay." Its about a man who travels back to his past, but with the full knowledge of what was to take place. During this time he is on a flight from SF that has the problems that you described.
