The leak of information about an undercover CIA employee that provoked a special prosecutor's investigation of senior White House officials came from then-Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage, according to a former Armitage colleague at the department.
Armitage told newspaper columnist Robert D. Novak in the summer of 2003 that Valerie Plame, the wife of a prominent critic of the Iraq war, worked for the CIA, the colleague said. In October of that year, Armitage admitted to senior State Department officials that he had made the remark, which was based on a classified report he had read.
Novak collected what he considered to be a confirming comment from White House political strategist Karl Rove, then wrote a column in July 2003 that cited Plame's CIA employment as a reason to question the credentials of the critic, former U.S. ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV.
In 2002, the CIA sent Wilson to Niger to determine whether Iraq was seeking nuclear material there. He subsequently accused the White House of distorting intelligence to justify the invasion of Iraq.
Novak's column set off a chain of events that culminated in the appointment of special prosecutor Patrick J. Fitzgerald and a grand jury's indictment of Vice President Cheney's chief of staff, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, for lying to investigators about his own conversations with reporters regarding Plame.

gezzzzzzzzz
want me to read it for you too!
damn
the link I orginally posted for this thread is the Hitchens article!
Let's send Fitzgerald a bill!
it says washingtonpost up top, but I see it now.
Nooooooo...I hope you know what hatred Powell/Armitage have for the Bush neocons and the War in Iraq. Powell could just be JEALOUS of W's changing the ME when Powell thought he OWNED that.....could be anti-Semitism, but they are co-cabalists.....don't believe it at your peril.
Perfidious, self-serving, dishonest.
According to Novak's rendition of the story (as told on Fox News a month or so ago), this article is not accurate.
Novak claimed that his source, now revealed as Armitage, did not give him the name of Wilson's wife. The source merely said that Wilson was sent to Niger "because his wife works at the CIA."
Novak then went to Who's Who and looked up Wilson's entry, which included the maiden name of his wife (talk about blowing her alleged "cover".) Novak then confirmed with the CIA that Valerie Plame Wilson was employed there.
Of course the case for the special prosecutor becomes all the more absurd when you consider that Armitage did not even utter her name, so I guess it has to be suggested that he did.
OK, I read it. Hey, what do you want me to say. All these people work for Bush. is Taft still the lawyer at State? Fire him tommorrow. will it happen? you tell me.
I read it - its a stretch. its a stretch to believe Powell knew for sure that the whole sequence of events with Fitzgerald et al, that came after, would surely have happened.
did Armitage and Powell testify in front of the GJ? since Novak did, and he wasn't jailed, he must have given up Armitage as his source.
What I find very puzzling about this whole deal is after
all the research that's been done and is still ongoing,
going back years to the beginning, it's as though everyone
is only reading the last chapter of the book and thinks it
all started in 2003.
WHO TOLD Richard Armitage?
Was it Joe Wilson?
Was it a crime to tell the State Department that Plame worked for the CIA?
Logically only the CIA knows who is and who isn't an agent, so if a persons identity was revealed it would have to start from the CIA- Correct?
His aide, Marc Grossman ,was a lifelong friend of Wilson and Plame.
As most of us have long suspected, the man who told Novak about Valerie Plame was Richard Armitage, Colin Powell's deputy at the State Department and, with his boss, an assiduous underminer of the president's war policy.
(His and Powell'sand George Tenet'sfingerprints are all over Bob Woodward's "insider" accounts of post-9/11 policy planning, which helps clear up another nonmystery: Woodward's revelation several months ago that he had known all along about the Wilson-Plame connection and considered it to be no big deal.)
That's Clinton stuff, the Ft. Marcy Park and Burglaries, are all Clinton-type things....why are you saying that about Bush? Or are you saying something more??
Geesh...Powell/Armitage are joined at the hip...what one knew, the other knew. Armitage is Powell's sock puppet or as one writer put it he's the IRON Fist in Powell's velvet glove. Powell is a little mean anti-Semite it seems, and so is Armitage. The term neo-cons is a tip-off.
Armitage read it in a classified document.
Amen!! Wilson was in business with Alamoudi, a Terrorist Sympathizer!! These people are dangerous.
