Jack Kemp to Campaign for Lieberman

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Jack Kemp will hit the campaign trail with a fellow former vice presidential candidate from another party: Sen. Joe Lieberman. Lieberman said Tuesday that Kemp, a Republican former congressman and U.S. housing secretary, telephoned to offer support to his independent campaign, which the three-term senator began after losing the Democratic primary to Greenwich businessman Ned Lamont. No date for the visit has been set. "We've worked together for years on some good projects that got done," Lieberman told reporters while campaigning in New London. Kemp was former Sen. Bob Dole's running mate in 1996. Lieberman, the Democratic nominee for vice president in 2000, has seen most Democratic leaders flock to Lamont since the Aug. 8 primary. Many saw the race as a referendum on the Iraq war. Lamont harshly criticized Lieberman's support of the war and said the senator was too close to Republicans and President Bush. A Quinnipiac University poll last week showed Lieberman with a 12-point lead over Lamont among likely voters, while an American Research Group poll showed Lieberman with only a slight advantage. Republican Alan Schlesinger received single-digit support in both polls.

Interesting. Could this be this some type of comeback for Jack Kemp, or has his time passed?

I always thought he was the most "Reaganesque" GOP candidate.

I've always liked Kemp but a lot of people in the right don't like him or don't trust him because he reaches out to the left and sometimes takes their side. I think his time passed when he performed pretty poorly in the 1996 election as a VP candidate.

I voted for his ticket but its this kind of maneuver that makes him untrustable. Imagine putting your nuts out there for a guy that voted 99 to 1 against your party!..Geez these Rinos will be the death of us. When he wins the media will use his support of "conservatives" as a tool against us.

Jack Kemp is a Rino. He may not be quite as bad as McCain but nevertheless he is a rino and "reaching out" to the left is not a positive characteristic. We get enough of that with W.

This doesn't make any sense unless Lieberman has promised to switch should he win.

>>>Jack Kemp to Campaign for Lieberman

What? What's happening to our party?

Why is Jack Kemp, a conservative, campaigning for a democrat?

I don't know. That's why I put forth my idea that this may be a re-entry of sorts for Jack Kemp into the political arena.

I would be more impressed if Jack Kemp were able to talk some sense into Lieberman - Lieberman is a staunch opponent of tax cuts, opposes decent choices for Federal judgeships and the Supreme Court, is "undecided" on UN Ambassador Bolton, and on and on and on...

Might be the kiss of death. I think the Republicans should maintain a low profile. This could turn off some of the libs who might otherwise vote for Joe.

We get enough of that with W.

You can say that again. W is more liberal than a liberal.

You really think he's gonna switch party and run for office again as a democrat?

Kemp's okay. Some of his ideas, especially on the economic side, were ahead of his time. But, a comeback? Nah. He's never recovered from how surprisingly unprepared he was for his run as VP in 1996. He was a dreadful candidate.

Call me crazy, but I actually like Joe Lieberman. He is one of the few politicians in Washington that focus on the issues and try to create solutions rather than spew hatred of the other side. I don't always like what he does or what he believes, but he is a decent man and a good senator.
