Steve and Olaf made it clear that the bastards didn't know who they had. My impression from the interview was that they googled the name "after" the fact. When they read that he had been the first journalist at the site of Uday and the other Saddam son's death, that's when they suspected him as a spy and told Olaf they were going to kill Steve.
