SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (AP) -- Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld on Tuesday accused critics of the Bush administration's Iraq and counterterrorism policies of lacking the courage to fight terror.
In unusually explicit terms, Rumsfeld portrayed the administration's critics as suffering from "moral and intellectual confusion" about what threatens the nation's security.
In remarks prepared for delivery to the American Legion's national convention, Rumsfeld recited what he called the lessons of history, including the failed efforts to appease the Adolf Hitler regime in the 1930s.
"I recount this history because once again we face the same kind of challenges in efforts to confront the rising threat of a new type of fascism" he said.
Rumsfeld spoke to an American Legion convention as part of a coordinated White House strategy...
Rumsfeld... said it should be obvious to anyone that terrorists must be confronted, not appeased.
"But it is apparent that many have still not learned history's lessons," he said, adding that part of the problem is that the American news media have tended to emphasize the negative rather than the positive.
He said, for example, that more media attention was given to U.S. soldiers' abuse of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib than to the fact that Sgt. 1st Class Paul Ray Smith received the Medal of Honor.

I love how he smacked the media at the end, comparing coverage of SFC Paul Smith's incredible heroism to Abu Ghraib.
I don't think it's so much their courage that's lacking as it is their brains.
EXCELLENT POST. For those who say Bush is no different than Clinton, screw you!
But please everyone, let's all repeat together:
"There's no difference between the Dems and GOP." < / scoff >
Re: #4 and #5. That's scary when I start thinking like Pissant! :-D
You bet they do Rummy, you bet.
And they are unpatriotic too, but I know he can't come out and say that....so I will :)
*shudder*
Rummy bump!
Yes, and even here in this news article we don't hear about what Sgt. Smith did to earn the Medal.
I've never heard, but would like to. And where will I hear it? CNN? Don't think so.
I love Rumsfeld's candor!
Good piece, especially for AP. I love it when Rummy talks to or about the ineptitude and misguided views of the Left. This reminds me of his remark to the Hildabeast and her rant the other day: Myyy, Myyy.
I suppose saying they suffer from moral and intellectual confusion is better than calling them a pack of yellow dog cowards.
He Nailed it!
The President is in possession of more facts than are his critics concerning Iraq. Both he and Rumsfeld seem to be made of the same stuff Thomas Jefferson showed several centuries ago, thankfully.
