Allen Park Officer Hit In Crash Caused By Text-Messaging Driver

POSTED: 9:57 am EDT August 28, 2006

A suburban Detroit police officer was injured in an accident caused by a teenage motorist sending a text message on his cell phone.

Michigan State Police said a 17-year-old male driver hit the rear of an Allen Park police car, which was policing an earlier crash Sunday afternoon.

The crash caused the police car to spin around and hit the officer, who was thrown into the air on an Interstate 94 ramp.

The teenage driver, who told police he was text-messaging on his cell phone when he hit the police car, suffered minor injuries. He was treated and released from Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn.

The officer, who was listed in stable condition, was being treated at Detroit Receiving Hospital.

I live in Allen Park, less than a mile from the accident site (and as far as I know I'm the only AP Freeper). This is the first I heard about this. I know a couple of the local cops personally, but this article doesn't give the name of the injured cop. I'd like to hear the whole story with more details.

About 3 or 4 months ago, had a teenager run over a walker or bicyclist because the teenager was textmessaging someone.

What was worse was the punishment. Not even one day in jail.

The local police and HWY Patrol here in Florida have laptops in their cars ,, it is COMMON to see them typing and reading as they drive ,, sure it's work related (running plates etc.) but it's much more dangerous than using a phone which I can get ticketed for ... had a cop drive off the road into a sign (a cement wall actually) at a new shopping area in Altamonte Springs for that reason , idiot was running a plate on a car that ran from him while he was running at high speed ... funny cops NEVER get in trouble for at fault accidents even when they kill innocent people when they're hot-dogging they're treated like hero's (assuming they kill themselves in the crash also).

Damn, I hate days that start like that. Hope he recovers quickly.

Did you guys hear about the guy last week that shot that woman at the LP/AP border and then hid out at Paun School before shooting himself?

Yes. I know that little appartment complex (you can drive through it for a good shortcut across that part of town) but I had no idea it was a halfway house.

The day care camp right next door evidentally had no idea that's what it was either. My children and I were driving down Dix to get to DOC when we spotted the helicopter and road blocks at 75. When I heard he was still on the loose a few blocks from the house we hauled back and bolted everything dead tight.
