I think not. The record for Congressmen jumping to the Presidency is not good. It's really hard to build a base without even a statewide race under your belt. And the Speakership is a low profile office to ordinary voters.

I think Newt's base is pretty much limited to conservative bloggers and news junkies.

right now I'd say the race is primed for a Jeb Bush or Arnold Schwartznegger to drop in.
