MCCAIN STATEMENT ON WAR IN IRAQ
For Immediate Release
Friday, Aug 25, 2006

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator John McCain released the following statement on the war in Iraq:

“I agreed with the President’s difficult decision to go to war in Iraq. I remain fully supportive of his determination not to leave Iraq until the freely elected government of that country and its armed forces are able to defend their country from foreign and domestic enemies intent on thwarting the will of the Iraqi people to create a civil society in which the rights and security of all Iraqis are protected.

“I have often emphasized the importance of leveling with the American people about the high costs and many difficulties of the mission, the potentially calamitous consequences of failure and the many benefits of success, as the President has also frequently stressed. But I have never intended my concern that the American public be fully informed about the conduct and consequences of the war to indicate any lessening of my support for our mission there. On the contrary, I view a candid, informed public discussion of the war as critical to sustaining popular support for the war and, thus, indispensable to ensuring the ultimate success of our mission.

And I commend the President for his public statements offering Americans an honest assessment of the progress we have made in Iraq and the challenges that still confront us there, and, of course, for his determination to defend American security and international peace and stability by succeeding in this arduous and costly enterprise.”

The Powell doctrine really means not to go to war unless one has the equivalent of the 1991 force during the Gulf War. Don't turn Powell into the equivalent of U.S. Grant. It was upon his advise that Bush 41 ended the war so precipitately. He is not a fighting general; he has never commanded a force of any size in battle. His rise was owed solely to his political skills.

It is pretty clear that the coalition can win in Afghanistan and Iraq in one way or another, but it will be a long, hard slog.
Secretary Rumsfeld, October 16, 2003

Ah yes, Rummy's doctrine of "Limited Presence" is patterned after this great historic event click here
Incidentally, the English were extremely successful at first, especially under great leaders such as Henry V and his "Band of Brothers" but, due primarily to a lack of overwhelming force and partially in a fanatical (female) leader that convinced her insurgent followers of mystical Godly powers in religious zeal (remind you of anyone?), the French (who have thunk it) eventually won.

I don't know whether the email I sent had any impact, but I included that my son is currently serving in the Iraq Theatre, and that the comments of his, and Murtha's, and Kerry's, et. al., were not helping our troops.

You all like to toss out words like "insane," "backstabber," etc. But when someone asks you for evidence to back up such nonsense, you can't seem to say a thing.

Exactly where were we supposed to PUT this "overwhelming force?" You know that Kuwait is not the place. The state department made sure that we could not come in through Turkey. No, Powell did not want this war. Never mind the Scowcroftian prognatications about a kinder and gentler Saddam once he had been smashed. Seven years afdter the Gulf War even the Clinton Administration had come to the conclusion that he OUGHT to be overthrown.

Meandog,

I really like your tagline, though I would hazard to say that very few could fill those shoes.

It was upon his advise that Bush 41 ended the war so precipitately...

I believe you are confusing him with Baker? But, regardless, 41 was the pres and it was his decision (Bushbots, (I am not implying you), are so quick to assign accountability everywhere but the place it belongs).

been a staunch believer in the Powell doctrine of "overwhelming force

Yeah, the SAME Conventional War dogma followed in Vietnam. The "More Boots on the Ground" crowd sent 500,000 to Vietnam. How did that work out for us?

Counter Insurgency ops are complete different then Conventional Military operations. They are as much political as military. It would be wise if the Always Whining actually tried learning the differences. What THEY are advocating the US do is repeat the same errors made by EVERY force confronted by an Asymmetrical threat since out Revolution.

Maybe that is the problem. The Neo Isolationists keep manufactured excuse rather then admit they have NO clue how to win a Counter Insurgency and have been wrong about Iraq since the start. Rather then admit THEIR errors they keep trying to straddle the fence on Iraq being for the mission but against how it is being run.

Sorry, but we see thur the smoke and mirrors where. All this "overwhelming force" in a Counter Insurgency accomplishes is to alienate the local allies and results in the local forces being pushed to the margins. It also massive increases the number of targets and thus significantly increasing the casualties suffered by the US Forces.

"boots on the ground" is another one of those slogans screamed by people who actually know nothing about the topic but just cannot bear to bring themselves to actually support the effort due to their political distaste for President Bush.

"The President has never been any less then 100% candide about the cost and difficulty of this war. That some of you doffuses in the US Senate kidded yourself that it would NOT be as tough as President Bush said is YOUR problem."

Hey Johnnie. People with convenient memories are high maintenance, heh?

PS..Don't have a coronary getting P*ssed at them..we need you. :)

Well I didn't call him a backstabber nor "insane". Just used a nickname of McInsane and that is my opinion. You are certainly entitled to yours as I am to mine. I just have no trust in the man with his background having a finger on the "button".

And he certainly won't get my support for a run at the presidency which is also my prerogative.

Ain't looking for a fight here as I don't own a fighting dog.

Curious why some FReepers cling so desperately to this media manufactured myth. The data does NOT support the "Iraq is falling into a Civil War" claims. Seems some people in the Junk Media would rather keep screaming the lie then admit they have been wrong about Iraq all along.

Look at the raw data. Same steady low level violence for three years. That is the sign of an "insurgency" that cannot evolve or grow. They are stuck in stage 1 guerrilla warfare. They can kill people and cause pain, they cannot evolve. Meanwhile the Counter Insurgency political structure is rapidly growing. The terrorists can continue to kill but they cannot win. The raw data below shows the utterly LIE in the DNC directed Junk Media spin lie about "Iraq on the verge of a civil war".

"As much as I may disagree with him on some issues, he's a decent man whom I'll certainly consider supporting for the GOP Presidential nomination."

That is just one of his personalities. He is unstable and insane!

Certain Freepers reported here in 2000 that they directly witnessed mcinsane's antics (during his FAILED 2000 primary run). He is on video tape speaking to a high school class in an almost incoherent ramble, speaking of Death Stars etc.

He IS insane! The Swifties had direct evidence of his unhinged behavior. Believe what you will.
