MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia is to create its first women-only traffic police unit because commanders believe they are less corrupt than men, a newspaper reported on Monday.
The male-dominated traffic police routinely forgive traffic violations in exchange for bribes. Many believe this culture helps make Russia's roads among the world's most dangerous: about 35,000 people are killed in accidents each year.
"The first female platoon of 26 traffic officers will patrol the centre of Volgograd (in southern Russia)," Izvestia daily quoted regional police chief Mikhail Tsukruk as saying.
"There is research which proves that women are not inclined to bribe-taking," the paper quoted him as saying. A few women already serve in the traffic police.

Bad Idea unless they're heavilly armed. The fact that women have equal rights there doesn't mean they have the respect of men.
My friend Tatyana has worked in both Russian and American hospitals and she sees only a fraction of the violence on women as she saw there.

That's really cheaper than paying those officers a decent salary.

I don't think she is still a policewoman. There were all sorts of rumors about why she stepped down as Miss Universe after only 2 weeks. One was that she was pregnant, another was that she was the girlfriend of a Russian Mafia boss and another was that she was so offended by having to appear on the Howard Stearn show and how he treated her that she wanted nothing to do with the title after that. The only thing I know for sure about her is that she was absolutely stunning during the contest. My wife smacked me during the swimsuit competition because of my distraction/attraction to her.

Controversy soon loomed ahead for the Russian Miss Universe winner, however. She was rumored to be pregnant, news which made the headlines. Oxana denied the rumors and stated that she voluntarily gave up her crown for personal reasons, mainly because she wanted to finish her law degree. Officially, she was dethroned for failing to perform the numerous duties expected of a Miss Universe titleholder.
Fedorova, however, has become very successful in Russia since the end of her reign. In addition to continuing her police (she is now a police Major) and college professor careers and obtaining a Ph.D. in Civil Law, she has become active in politics, as a candidate for the Russian Party of Life in the December 2003 Party List parliament elections and the March 2005 Voronezh regional elections. She is also an advocate for Russian youth causes and became a co-chairman of the Russian youth movement, Energy of Life, as well as a representative of UNICEF in her country. Oxana has also achieved great success in the entertainment and television fields. She has hosted the number one children's television show, Spokoinoi Nochi, Malyshi ("Good Night, Kids") since December 2002, and the reality television show Fort Boyard-Russian version in 2003 and 2004. Also, since September 2004, Oxana has hosted the new television show, Subbotnik. 2006 marked Oxana's acting debut. In March, she appeared in the top-rated Russian television sitcom "If You Are Not Born Beautiful," and in April, her first film "Sofia" was released.

Wow! I'm very impressed. She obviously saw more of a need for her services in her own country than being a powder puff representative of Donald Trump's.
Too bad she hasn't been offered the anchor spot on the CBS Evening News. I would make time to watch it every night.
