Believe me, I know the frustration and sadness, but do whatever you can. It's the only shot you get, and then it's over. I have regrets, even while knowing there may never have been anything I could have done.

I have another sister who is now in AA. I thought for sure I would have already been at her funeral, but now she has a new life. She just passed four years sober. It was a struggle with her, but in her case it worked.

Try and don't regret (although you are right, ultimately they must do it themselves).

The drinker must want to quit for their own reasons, and the only help that others can provide is to help them to recognize that their addiction is causing concern and pain to those who love them.

Besides this, the only other help that outsiders can provide is to provide a role model proving that quitting is indeed possible, and that life can be good and complete without demon alcohol. That is the role of people like those on these threads who witness about quitting.

I'm sure it's tough going telling and remembering your sister's
(and family's) experience.
But it is really helpful for others to hear the story.

I've learned a lot from the "Intervention" show on A&E.
I hope that series continues and maybe does long-term follow-up
shows to see how some of the people are doing a couple oft the years later.
Especially to see how ones that relapsed managed to get back up
and get clean again.
And, less pleasantly, why/how others didn't.
