Range on an SS-N-5 is only around 700 nm. I would not classify this as "long range". The Trident I C-4 missiles on an Ohio class SSBN are in excess of 4000nm and the Trident II D-5 are 50% greater than that.
With ground based installations this is easier...but reports indicate it was shot at a target onm the surface of the sea. With a moving target at sea they have to have other means of targeting than inertia guidance which they are not likely to possess for over the horizon targeting, or if they do, are not likely to survive very loing in a shooting war.
Just my opinion.
Of course in the Straits, everything is pretty much a visible target and its and easy waterway to shut down with a few missiles and the will to use them...and also the understanding that the consequeences will be severe.
It doesn't have to be long range to stand off the coast of the US or Israel beyond the territorial limit of 12 or three miles depending on your observance of the Law of the Sea treaty.
