It's Gingrich's to Lose (Zogby '08 White House Poll Shows Tancredo 4th)

Washington Whispers

It's Gingrich's to Lose in 2008

Sorry, Hillary. And Big John, you might have missed your chance in 2000.

That's because a new and innovative poll from John Zogby about 2008 presidential candidates finds former Republican Speaker Newt Gingrich way out front of fellow GOP-ers like Sen. John McCain and also finds moderates like former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner far ahead of libs like Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Here's the unusual thing about the Zogby poll released to Whispers: When questioning likely primary voters, only brief biographies and not names were given.

In other words, voters picked the one with the best experience. Without her name recognition working for her, Clinton came in a miserable sixth out of 10.

"It looks like the Democrats want to grab the middle," says Zogby, who says outside-the-beltway Democrats lean moderate.

Surprises on the GOP side: Harsh immigration critic Rep. Tom Tancredo ranks fourth, showing the power of the anti-immigrant issue.

Is the poll important? Big time. In 1999, Zogby's "blind bios" poll identified "maverick" McCain as a very attractive candidate in primary states long before he almost knocked off George W. Bush.

The Democratic order and percentage: Warner, 14.8; retired Gen. Wesley Clark, 14.2; Wisconsin Sen. Russ Feingold, 12.2; Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh, 11.1; former Sen. John Edwards, 10.4; Clinton, 5.6; New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, 5.3; former Alaska Sen. Mike Gravel, 4.9; Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, 4.9; Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack, 3; Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, 2.8.

The GOP rankings: Gingrich, 21.4; McCain, 13.3; former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, 11.2; Tancredo, 9.9; Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel, 6.1; Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, 5.8; Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, 5.6; Virginia Sen. George Allen, 4.9; Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback,4.3; Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, 3.8; New York Gov. George Pataki, 2.8.

Hillary would get a queens welcome. Unfortunately, Hillary would win then because her MANY, MANY scandals would be ignored.

Her Thighness would get the queens welcome no matter what. That said, while the Drive-By might ignore her previous scandals and lack of any accomplishments, the voters won't. Drive-By always assume the voter are stupid rubes, waiting to be molded by them to vote Dem. The Drive-By has been predicting GOP failure for many years, and have been wrong every time. It is in their lexicon: GOP evil, must fail in next election. Their self-delusion is one of their big weaknesses.

My only concern about Mike is if he has the foreign policy skills. He's done a great job as gov. Mike's done an easily demonstrably MUCH better job than Bill did.

Bingo. I could not have said it better than you.

Unfortunately though, I think this poll will only encourage Newt. He has a short memory why he was forced out as speaker. He should remain in the private sector or he would be a good US representative to the UN.

The reality of who are the significant candidates on both sides is truly sobering. The American people have proved themselves smarter over the past few decades than to pick some sitting senator who has been practicing being a pompous windbag. That said, the reality that hit me was that Newt like Clinton talks too much and like Clinton tries to impress everyone with how smart he is. If Clinton got elected twice maybe there is hope for Newt. He seems to understand the importance of illegal immigration and he also understands that Iran and North Korea are serious threats to which the Red Chinese are offering little help in quelling. As a Republican voter, I do not think that I could go to the polls and vote for Giuliani or McCain. I have never voted for a Democrat for President which would be akin to voting for Giuliani and when I was given the opportunity to vote for a crazy man, I passed on Perot, which would be akin to McCain.

This poll is the dumbest thing I've ever wasted 10 seconds reading and 30 seconds typing about.

I guess Newt's a cinch if he can just keep everybody's name off of the ballot.

Pfftttttttt.

Good News! Newt would be terrific. Of course he's strong on foreign policy, and his past depth of analysis and advocacy on issues like health care reform could steal a march on the Dimocrats wrt to some of their favorable domestic issues.

If he can't get the southern part of the state to go for him in a big way, the DC 'burbs will hurt him....

With our current and previous presidents both being former governors, it would be tough to make an effective case that would be damaging to Tancredo on that basis. No matter what the looney polls say, foreign policy and wartime benefits the one with the (R) behind his or her name.

That sentiment speaks for a lot of so-called "socons," myself included.

If it came down to McCain and Hillary, I won't vote. They're equally worthless in my eyes.

And Mike Huckabee, a shameful open borders loon, has chances that are tantamount to Tom Tancredo.

The person that wins will be polished in the arts of BS, refined in the school of compromised principles, and as bold in strategy as Uncle Joe on Sundays. IOW, that person will do nothing to advance the cause of liberty, or protect the rights of individuals.

If the person CAN win, they will have long ago lost most of what is great within.

After 10 years as a governor he has as much experience in the forign policy field as any other past president, except maybe Nixon.

If it came down to McCain and Hillary or Guilani and Hillary, I would have to cast my vote against Hillary. The closer we get to the 2008 elections, people will have to remember we must keep Hillary out at all costs. As much as I disagree with McCain and Guiliani on issues, those two combined could not do as much damage to the republican cause as Hillary could. We all need to remember that.
