Those who believe in nothing will fall for anything, as the old saying goes. So it's only fitting that a Republican Party that has ceased to believe in anything has fallen for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Maybe in the early days of his administration, and through the defeat of his reform agenda last November, it was defensible to support him. But no more. Yet many Republican leaders at the state GOP convention in Century City were still atwitter over the Terminator's tired clichés and faux tough talk.
--snip
At Century City, Schwarzenegger blasted the Democrats: "Our friends in the other campaign want to go back to the failed policies of the past higher taxes, more government spending, more government regulations and less growth."
Compare what the other party does with Schwarzenegger's program of higher debt spending, more government spending and more government regulations and less growth, and it's quite a choice, isn't it?
Of course, the Democrats are always bad. So, of course Republicans will usually rally around their candidate, no matter how far afield his viewpoints might be. But a point is reached where it's not worth it anymore, where victory isn't so sweet because "our" guy isn't in any fundamental way different from "their" guy.
--snip
At the Republican convention, Schwarzenegger refused to be seen with the Republican slate of down-ticket candidates. Tom McClintock, one of the most principled men in modern political life, is running for lieutenant governor against John Garamendi, who during an Editorial Board meeting a couple years ago actually sung the praises of the Cuban health care system! ... The governor is too good to stand with McClintock and Poochigian or some of the other perfectly well-qualified GOP candidates for statewide office? Then Republicans should be too good to stand with him.

That gives me an idea. I think I'll use"...a drowning man needs an anvil."
I guess I'll rotate them.
Here's another: "Arnold's liberalism is like a fart in church, we're supposed to pretend we don't notice."
But you seem to have no problem ignoring Angelides's leftist socialism. In fact you seem to prefer that, the way you keep advocating against Arnold, which can only result in ONE outcome: victory for Angelides.
ROFL!
Au contraire my RINO femme friend. I haven't ignored Angelides' leftist socialism, any more than I've ignored Fidel Castro's socialism. When the conversation calls for it I will discuss both. Alas most of the conversation lately has been over the damage Schwarzenegger has been doing to the GOP, our platform, and our deeply held beliefs. In those conversations Angelides and Fidel Castro don't really enter into it since they can't destroy the party from within.
Now where were we? Oh yes, "The California Republican Party needs Arnold the way a state dinner needs ipecac syrup."
"Now where were we?"
===
We are where we have to make a choice between Arnold and Angelides and every time, you seem to choose Angelides.
How conservative is that?
I had to look that one up. ROFL!
Those in the party leadership were already in hot water with the party membership over events in 2003 and the elitist appointment of a liberal, Democrat look alike candidate for governor in 2005 was probably the final straw. When the CAGOP denied the party membership the right to nominate a gubernatorial candidate of their choice the lights went out.
Had I volunteered to work on the FreeRepublic campaign, I'd be ducking and running right now. On my next employment application I would never mention my connection with the FairOpinion fiasco. I'd simply say I was a Republican Party functionary.
Conservatives weren't happy with the CAGOP for surrendering its principles in 2003. Anointing a liberal windbag for governor has made us irate.
Well... Ever feel like you're wasting you keystrokes???
So what's that kindof a post for? You tryin for "winning through intimidation," or something? Phhhhhht!!!
OK scratch that. (Somehow I was reminded of the time GH Bush hurled on the Japanese Prime Minister's lap.)
The California Republican Party needs Arnold the way a ballerina needs army boots.
Yeah! That's right!! Go lookin all over the danged thread for all your little mental bebe's of purely pragmatic poo that do nothing to put this state back on a course to real recovery!!!
Well, I don't know about you, but my nose is sure wrinkled up at the stench!!!
Hey! Those are getting better and better!! We need an endless string of those, kinda like "you'd be a red-neck if ____" phrases for publication prior to the election!!!
Well that's the difference between us and other people. FO would blush and keep on singing Amazing Grace. You and I would shout out "Hey! Who farted?"
Oh! I should say you ARE really on a roll!! Let's get these in the people's hands to carry on laminated flash cards, suitable for memorizing and carrying in one's pocket all the way into the voting booth on election day!!!
The California Republican Party needs Arnold the way a tenor needs a jalapeno pepper.
Oh ho ho hoooooooooo, that's GOOD!!!
Oh Danny I know!!! We're both just such crude little cunservitives... (spoken with a wincing lisp) an we're jus so impressed with celebrities who talk way big even when they's jus gurleymen deep inside...
Not at all. It was a well stated post and worth repeating.
