They're playing to their brethren and I'm afraid they won't want to be embarrassed by the new converts' statements once or if they're released. It seems that, in many instances, even their own fellow terrorists are saying this kidnapping was unjustified. If they harm Steve and Olaf physically, they might fear getting some crap from their friends. I know that sounds crazy, but there may be (hopefully) some truth to it. And I'll bet word spreads fast among their own.

What their fellow terrorists and leader say publicly say means nothing, it's what's said in private that matters.
Remember Arafat? His terrorist rear-end sitting fat and happy in the White House, guests of the Clintoons, spewing lies about peace and recognition of Israel. He'd return home and give speeches promoting the destruction of Israel and the continuation of attacks against Israeli civilians.
