WELCOME BACK, MAX! Max Cleland is coming back to Johnstown!!
Former Sen. Max Cleland of Georgia is throwing a rally in Johnstown, PA for Rep. John Murtha -- the day before Vets for the Truth's Boot Murtha Rally. The news is highlighted in the following release from Murtha's re-election committee: [EXCERPT:] JOHNSTOWN, Pa., Aug. 25 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Murtha for Congress Committee said that former U.S. Sen. Max Cleland (D-Ga.) announced last night he's leading a large-scale effort among his veteran brothers to support U.S. Rep. John P. Murtha (D-Pa.), who is coming under attack from "radical right-wing forces in the veterans' community" aimed at "swift-boating Murtha, like they did former Democratic nominee for president Sen. John Kerry. The rally will be held Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006 at 11 a.m. in Central Park in Johnstown, Pa. Cleland said he expects veterans from all over America to make the journey "to support Murtha in an unprecedented show of unity against the war." VFTT's Boot Murtha Rally is set for Sunday, Oct. 1 starting at 2 pm. Rally participants will gather at Central Park in Johnstown and proceed to the Cambria County War Memorial Arena for the full event. Pennsylvania radio personalities Quinn & Rose of the popular "War Room with Quinn & Rose" show will be co-emcee'ing the Rally. Also lined up for the Boot Murtha Rally: Terry Pennington, father of Rob Pennington, one of the so-called "Pendleton Eight," who are being held without bail at the Camp Pendleton, CA, brig. They are being charged with murder and conspiracy, those seven Marines and one Navy Corpsman. David Beamer, father of Todd Beamer, leader of the anti-hijacker group on Flight 93 (the man who said, "Let's roll!" John Wrobleski, father of a Marine killed in Iraq, and who deeply resents the dishonor brought upon the USMC by Murtha's comments. Gregg Garvey, father of Justin Garvey, who was killed in Iraq, founder of a program that enables local communities to purchase and erect memorials to their fallen sons and daughters. He will lead the memorial service that precedes the rally. |

Maybe Cleland can get Code Pink to line up their fake but accurate coffins for his rally -- like they did at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Can't wait for the Tweedley Dee/ Tweedley Dumb dance. Oh wait, Max blew his own legs off for his country. (or for a beer, I can't remember) At any rate, I don't see this causing a landslide for Murtha.

Code stinko, vets for peas and justice, commie front group ANSWER, world workers party, cpusa.....I sure wouldn't bet against you on the affiliation of many at his rally to those groups. Looks like they'll have a gay old anti-war protest day of it.
Wonder how that will set with conservative Dems of the disrict?

If you were Murtha and wanted support from other politicians would you first ask people like FORMER SENATOR Cleland and Former Speaker Wright? Wouldn't you ask current leaders...like Pelosi and Reid?
I think Murtha did just that plus some 201 currently sittling congressman and 44 currently sitting Senators in addition. I think it likely that everyone he asked said NO WAY.
Only when everyone who has something to lose had said NO did Murtha ask a FORMER Senator and a FORMER Speaker of the House to support him. They are two people with names that can not be hurt by supporting Murtha.
That says to me that everyone currently in office turned Murtha down. I don't know if any of those serving in the legislature felt that they could help Murtha, but we can certainly deduce that they feel campaigning for Murtha can certainly hurt them.

There are a lot of questions about Murtha's Vietnam tour and his two Purple Hearts. From what I've read these were awarded after he got into Congress despite a lack of evidence of any injuries inflicted by the enemy. I think if he would sing a Form 180 it would clear things up. I didn't serve with Murtha but I was in the same division and our tours overlapped. I know he was a regimental intelligence officer which means most of his time would have been spent sifting paper in tent or a hut.

Murtha is crapping cinder blocks about now. He has hitched himself so closely to the antiwar movement that he has no chance of distancing himself come November. LOL...I think you nailed it. He'll have a very hard time trying to explain the ties to that antiwar movement.

I'm in total agreement with you re refusals by Murtha's fellow rats to defend and back him.
He went suddenly planning to campaign for many of his peers to basically none. Then as you pointed out in this reply, he has no current member or senator running out to help him.
We both know that the members of congress use private focus groups of selected voters to get their feelings on certain critical subjects. Apparently, Murtha didn't do well in these focus groups.

Also realize a lot of Dem House members were put off by Murtha saying he would seek the Majority Leader position after the election. That rankled on two levels:
Public presumption of a win (very dangerous before it actually happens), and
Public presumption that they saw him as some kind of leader, instead of a useful idiot.

Wouldn't that be nice? Might open some eyes of the pro-Murtha veterans. Most folks in Murtha's district 12 do not go online, do not access the Internet, do not know what the DRUDGEREPORT is, etc. Their information comes from local and state newspapers, radio and TV, which serve up Murtha puff pieces.
If I were one of Murtha's constitutents and had no alternate media Internet knowledge, Cleland's rally would hit me like a sledge hammer.
