SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A campaign committee controlled by Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata received a half-million dollars this week from the California Building Industry Association, two days after the lawmaker killed flood-control legislation opposed by the group.
The $500,000 contribution was made to Rebuilding California, formed by Perata to promote the transportation, housing, flood control and other bond measures on the Nov. 7 ballot.
The massive donation on Thursday came after Perata's disclosure on Tuesday that he has shelved a package of eight flood-control bills touted as a way to reduce flooding risk in the Central Valley and other low-lying areas.
The California Building Industry Association vehemently has opposed two of the bills, designed to increase flood-protection requirements for future subdivisions in the Sacramento and San Joaquin river watersheds, and to require cities and counties to accept some financial liability for flooding
Bob Stern, president of the Center for Governmental Studies in Los Angeles, said the builders' $500,000 contribution is not illegal but that its timing is suspect. State law limits campaign contributions to a lawmaker's personal campaign account, but not to a candidate-controlled committee created to promote ballot measures.

Not that anyone cares but he's as dirty as a three dollar bill.
He took the money to help the children and the salmon
Old "Pistol Packin Perata" is the epitome of arrogance in self-serving "every man for himself," and while you're there... Help yourself anyway you can!!!
The wheels are just flat commin offa CA government... It's all on an accelerating downward spiral into the proverbial "Ring of Fire!"
The youth of today will not be able to pull enough of the charred pieces out to properly restore it after the current "BIG FIVE" get done destroying what's left of it's chaotic semblance of what once was...
I have been told that it might take 20 million dollars to successfully put the right to keep and bear arms into California's Constitution.
Perhaps just as much good might be done with just a million or two donated to the "right" politicians.
The CBIA wants to make sure the Propositions keep their "blank check" appeal.
With $100+ Billion, there will be plenty of pork to payoff all the legislators and spcial interests.
