I can't tell if they found explosives, or just residue.

A friend of mine works with C-4 on occasion and does demonstrations. Some of the people witnessing the demonstrations have been stopped in the airport on their way home because of the residue. The didn't even handle the live explosives, just the aftermath.

So, if it was just residue, then his story sounds very plausible.

I agree and that was my thoughts also. I have been around stone quarries and they blast frequently.

Without reading the whole article, I am not surprised anyone, including myself, would come to a knee-jerk conclusion.

I think just residue. I'm guessing not quite as many people would read a story about residue, no wonder the author left that detail out of the story!
