Yeah I bet he was "painting" the young males he brought to his apartment.
To be fair, that may have been all it was. I painted both male and female nudes in art class back in college, and there was nothing erotic about it. The human form, with all of its varying lines and curves, is fairly difficult to paint realistically and accurately. Many painters spend years mastering the art of drawing the human form.
There's even a very valid reason why he might have chosen day laborers...they work cheap, and they tend to be in physically good shape (hard work eliminates the flab that many Americans have, and accentuates the lines of the muscles).
He might have been a gay guy just looking for a roll in the hay, but I'm not willing to hang that on him based only on this article.

The guy was a chickenhawk, without a doubt.

In college, did you paint the subjects while you yourself was nude? How does this inhance an artist's ability to bring those human curves to life?
I am asking because I am not an artist and have never painted anyone nude (at least not on a canvas or paper and not with bushes...never mind)

He sure fits the profile of a sexual predator. Targeting young males - vulnerable ones - wanting them nude, alone with him in his apartment - in San Francisco! - and found naked. There's not enough here to convict, but the signs that provoke suspicion are all over.
