Another Day, Another Dozen Apologies From Sen. Allen
The Washington Post ^ | 8/25/06 | Dana Milbank

Posted on 08/25/2006 10:22:21 AM PDT by Blackirish

In lieu of potentially demoralizing issues such as Iraq, Allen addressed conservative causes -- the pledge of allegiance, judicial nominees, and arctic oil drilling to lower gas prices ("It won't bother any of the mosquitoes up there"). He regained some of his usual brashness when he criticized the Bush-backed immigration legislation as "convoluted," "outrageous" and "absurd.

PS. I don't really have a choice for '08 yet. In either party. I know that I detest both McCain and Hillary, but that's about it. (Well, Kerry and Frist make me ill too, but I classify them with the rest of the anklebiters that aren't really even worth mention).

Beyond that, I'm just in wait and see mode.

Gingrich will appeal the the 'cohort to be courted' only on the basis of his polcy proposals, not on his character strengths, which aren't strengths, so he won't appeal to them enough to be nominated. I voted for Romney in your poll, btw, if only because McCain and Giuliani are completely unacceptable considerations for the Presidency.

I am grateful Jim put up this force poll, because it will have some meaning, as to how much of the cohort if pushed, would pull the lever for Mitt. At the moment however, Rudy is poaching on the cohort, to some extent. I suspect about two thirds of Freepers are within the cohort, to some degree. McCain seems to be a no sale, despite his recent best efforts to appeal.

I really like George Allen, unfortunately the MSM hates him as they hate all Conservatives.

Maybe Biden might be your white knight. :) And then there is Dodd, and Warner too. So many choices.

If Biden is the 'white knight' then we are doomed.

I think Huckabee is a Baptist minister. He introduced covenant marriage in Arkansas and remarried his wife in a high-profile ceremony debuting the law, so he walks the walk.

I don't think the Arkansas micropolitics will be any kind of issue, because few people pay attention to state party cultivation, and I hold enough hope in the competence of candidates that they will "see the light" on immigration if the alternative is ending their career.

The one caveat: I've heard his wife is an alienating factor, and running her for Secretary of State on a vanity campaign was a very bad idea.

If you're going to remove Allen from Presidential consideration, then you need to remove McCain as well. I'd say the Keating 5 scandal was a bit more serious than "macaca."

It's still way too early to consider the 2008 presidential field closed. If Senator Rick Santorum and/or Governor Tim Pawlenty win reelection this November, they could be outstanding presidential candidates in 2008. They are both conservatives who would have attracted enough blue-collar conservative Democrats and retained enough suburban liberal Republicans to be elected and reelected in states that were carried by both Gore and Kerry and which border other pivotal swing states (Wisconsin and Iowa (plus Michigan through Lake Superior) in the case of Minnesota, and Ohio, West Virginia, New Jersey and Delaware in the case of Pennsylvania). And if Pawlenty and Santorum both win this November I think the two would form a nearly bulletproof presidential/VP ticket in November of 2008 (regardless of which of the two is atop the ticket). But first they have to win tough reelection battles this November.

Sen. Lindsey Graham will support McCain during the all important SC primary in 2008. Sanford, who endorsed McCain in 2000, is undecided for now. If McCain does win the SC primary, he could use it to build momentum to win the 2008 primaries.

{But he (Newt)does not stand by his wives}

Err. How times has Rudy been married? Rudy and Newt carry baggage. At least Mormon Mitt does not carry baggage.

My dream ticket would be Sanford/Pawlenty. Since neither is interested in running. I am, for now, tenatively leaning toward either McCain and Mormon Mitt.

{He will downplay the "culture war" stuff}

Rudy's secret weapon in wooing social conservatives lies in Rick Santorum. Rudy has raised money and toured the Philly suburbs with Santorum. Regardless of what happens to Santorum, I predict he will continue to live in DC, as a Senator or as a TV talking head for a conservative group.

Should Rudy win the primary, expect Santorum to be campaigning hard for him.

If Rudy should win the republican nomination I'll be campaigning hard for him at that point as he is FAR better than anything on the other side.
