Crusader’s son faces child-porn charge

The son of conservative religious activist Dave Daubenmire has been charged with downloading child pornography onto a computer at the family's Licking County home.

Zachary Daubenmire, 24, was arrested Tuesday by sheriff's detectives and charged with pandering obscenity involving a minor, a felony punishable by two to eight years in prison.

A repair technician working on the Daubenmires' computer on Monday called authorities after finding digital videos showing girls having sex with men, said Capt. Chad Dennis.

The video files, marked "illegal," were found under Zachary Daubenmire's user profile on the computer and apparently were not viewed by anyone else, Dennis said.

The younger Daubenmire, who lives with his parents at their Thornville-area home, confessed during questioning that he downloaded the videos, according to a court affidavit. He was freed on bond after spending a night in jail.

After his arrest, Zachary Daubenmire was dismissed as a volunteer assistant football coach at Heath High School, said Ellis Booth, assistant principal and athletics director.

WBNS-10TV's Laura Cole reported that the younger Daubenmire was to start this fall as a special-education teacher at Licking Heights High School.

Zachary Daubenmire was a star quarterback at London High School, where he played for his father, and went on to play football at Kenyon College and Denison University.

His father, who founded Pass the Salt Ministries and Minutemen United, has fought pornography as part of his religious crusade.

In a statement, Dave and Michele Daubenmire wrote that they were thankful their son's "sin" was discovered and that "he no longer had to hide the rot in his soul."

"The wound has been exposed; he has come clean; we can finally help him get well."

The elder Daubenmire gained national attention in 1999 when the American Civil Liberties Union sued the London school district to halt the coach's tradition of leading his team in prayer.

The Daubenmire family said they intend to seek counseling for their son.

Zachary Daubenmire was released on a $25,000 bond.

NO excuse for this pig downloading child-porn, but I have a bog problem with how this was found -- What was the repair technician doing snooping around through the computers file system.

Right. They can do that after he finishes a nice, long jail sentence.

Uh, looking for a problem on the computer, perhaps? Why else would they have called a technician in? So, he clicked "My Computer" displayed all the folders, looking for what was screwing up the machine, and found a folder called "illegal."

The pervert son probably picked up some malware poking around the porn sites, I'm guessing. I understand that a lot of porn sites install malware when you visit them, key loggers and that type of thing.

Technicians know this, you see, so when they get called in, they look for such malware on the computer.

From what I understand, this wasn't the kiddy-porn-loving son's computer in the first place. It belonged to the family. Creep!

I'd investigate Licking County too. That sounds suspicious.

Nice headline. Does Hezbollah publish this newspaper?

Not likely. Whenever I have been called, it is to fix/replace faulty hardware, figure out which peice of hardware is failing, or to run diagnostic tools to find the problem. If the computer had malware the procedure would be to run a virus checker, Spybot, ad-aware or one of myriad other tools and clean the system.

Now it is possible that the technician's software identified a corrupt/malicious file in that directory that it could not remove, and he had to go into the directory to clean it manually --- but the most likely situation is this guy liked to snoop around the hard-drives of his customers.

The article doesn't give enough info to say why he was in the directory, but it leaves the impression he was fishing.

In this case he luckily stumbled on these files and was able to get this pervert caught, but he could have just as easily accessed family financial records, etc while "Looking for a problem"

Or, perhaps, the hard drive was almost full, and the tech was trying to clear space. I've done that for a number of people when called in to troubleshoot a system.

While the usual place to start is in the temp directories, etc., sometimes you just have to hunt for other places to thin the system down.

Now, if I saw a folder named "illegal" while doing that process, I'd probably have a look in there. Wouldn't you?

In any case, a scumbag kiddie porn creep has been caught. The police didn't do an illegal search on this computer, so no 4th amendment issues arise. Apparently, the owner of the computer called in the technician, since the creep of a son certainly wouldn't have exposed himself like that.

In the process the kiddie porn was discovered...by a private party, hired by the computer's owner. Who knows....maybe ol' Dad had some suspicions about his ne'er-do-well 24 year old son who apparently still lived at home, while TEACHING in a school.

No, you're right. We don't know. What we do know is that a kiddie porn pervert has been caught. May he serve a long jail sentence with someone who was sexually molested as a child.

And that is the bottom line. :-)

Guess I am just sensitive to stuff like this. Comes with the territory, I work is computer security now. Our job is to make sure no one can access your data, even you the data owner. ROFL

I understand. Another thing occurred to me. If this computer was getting full of files, the natural thing to be looking for is huge image and video files. If this home PC is like most, nobody bothers to password protect their individual profiles.

So, the tech, may have done a simple search for video and image files, using standard file extensions. I'd be thinking about doing that on a full hard drive.

We don't know, but there was probably a family member nearby, able to answer questions about what files could be deleted.

So, the guy finds a bunch of video files in a folder named "illegal," and asks the owner if these files can be deleted.

"I don't know," says the owner. "Those are my son's files. I don't know what they are. Can we look at one?"

There are many scenarios where a technician might encounter files like these without snooping.

I have to go through my parents' and in-laws' computers regularly to dump enough enormous video files of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren to clear some space for more enormous files. They don't know enough to do it themselves, and we always end up watching the videos before deleting them or moving them off to a CD.

It's a common thing, especially with family PCs with individual profiles for family members.

That's what I'm guessing.

From the headline, I thought either Simon Montfort's or Richard The Lionhearted's son was in trouble.

Clearly I have been reading too much of the Iranian nutjob's
pronouncements.

Probably trying to recover the hard drive, which was what he was likely hired to do.

Computer technicians are obligated to report child porn on any computer that they're working on.

or place it there.

anyone who lets someone get access to their computer for any reason, is nuts. all it takes is someone with a memory stick to plant something on your system, and then turn you in for it, and you'll be doing a 25 year minimum sentence.

and with all the porn spam email floating around, and spyware, etc. lots of people have stuff on their systems they don't even know about, which could put them in jail.

IIRC, Gary Glitter was busted when child porn was found on his computer
by a technician.

And I think I've seen at least two stories in which professors have
been caught with child porn by techs.
(I think was a professor at a theological school; guess he was an expert on evil/smut)

Daubenmire's parents respond

The following letter was submitted by Zachary Daubenmire's parents to The Advocate on Thursday.

Our 24-year-old son was arrested this week for charges involving the use and dissemination of pornography. It is an insidious and shameful story. We are told by the experts that pornography is a victimless crime. We thank God that our son's self-inflicted sin didn't bring physical harm to anyone, but the fact is the landscape is scattered with those wounded by his actions. We are all deeply ashamed.

Our home computer crashed and we took it in for repair. The repairman discovered the material on the hard drive, called and informed us of his discovery, and with our knowledge reported it to authorities. We willingly met with Det. Barbuto and Det. Harmon of the Sheriff's department and have fully cooperated with their investigation. We refuse to sweep it under the table, but want to face this situation head-on. What he has done is shameful, despicable and repulsive. But he is our son and we love him. We will walk this path together.

As many of you know, we serve the Lord with our lives. We ask no special favors because of our position, but rather believe that we should be held to a higher regard because we claim Christ. We write today to give warning. If it can happen in our home, it can happen in yours. The computer was in our house, right under our eyes, and we weren't aware of his problem. Our prayer is that the Lord might use this situation to rescue others who are entrapped in this addiction. None of us are immune to sin. Please, tonight, sit down with your children, your spouse or other loved ones, and ask to see what they have stored on their computer. What starts out as a look at a few naked women can lead to unspeakable horror. We thank God that our son's sin was exposed and we ask that you take the steps necessary to rescue those close to you who may be silently struggling with the demonic forces of pornography. Death and destruction lay at the end of that path.

Zack has to now endure the consequences of his sin. The personal shame is overwhelming. But we believe in the redeeming power of the cross of Christ and are already working with counselors to bring about his healing. He will face the music; he will own up to his actions, as we stand beside him.

We know this may come off as self-serving. Interpret it however you choose. But the Daubenmire family rejoices that our son was caught. After a night in jail, he returned to us a free young man. Not free in the sense that he wasn't behind bars. But free in the sense that he know longer had to hide the rot in his soul. The wound had been exposed, he has come clean; we can finally help him well.

Our family apologizes to anyone who might have been hurt by this. We offer no excuses. Sin is destructive.

God is in the restoration business, and we do not walk alone. Our son was lost, and now he is found. We thank Christ for his mercy.

-- Coach Dave and Michele Daubenmire
