Human life is the presence of the living soul, the neshama. The nephesh is the soul found in all living things, but humans have been instilled with a neshama, a living soul, not just a nephesh (NPHsh in transliterated Hebrew). [I deal with this distinction briefly in my coming book, by the way. The key Hebrew word from Genesis is NShMTh.
